Description
Outlaws and gunslingers alike are rampant on the American frontier in the 1880s. Both sides of the law equally corrupted. The Templars, still desperately trying to gain control after the loss of their Confederate allies during the Civil War, have used their influence to rule the West with an iron fist. Outlaws torment civilians, robbing them of their gold and their lives. Meanwhile, lawmen grip the population tight, seizing power wherever they can. Only one thing stands between the Templars and their quest to destroy freedom. The Assassins, fighting for the innocent people, Natives and whites alike, devote themselves to ending the Templars’ plots and setting the frontier free.Related content

I had similar ideas regarding Old West assassins only taking place at an earlier time.
In one of them, a frontier town is celebrating a hanging, held by there Templar Marshall, as an Assassin watches on a roof, waiting to strike.
But as he makes a speech regarding justice, and how the worst of humanity are those that hold life in such low regard and how they should be punished, he admits that those who are to be hanged are in fact innocent. That the people gathered wouldn't care if they were guilty so long as they were entertained, using the fact that they brought out food and drink in celebration of Death. Declaring:
"I said this would be a day, when the guilty would receive judgement for their lack of respect for the lives of their fellows, And it shall!"
All the while wagons are being brought in to cut off the gathered crowd from the rest of town. by the Marshall's loyal men. Trapping them in its centre As the condemned are released, much to the confusion of the Assassin as well as their own as he continues.
"So... people of this fine town. For the crimes of decadence, depravity, and wilful disregard for life."
The sheets covering stands on Either side of the Gallows, as well as the wagons. Are pulled down, revealing Gatling guns, primed to fire. surrounding the no longer celebrating, now terrified crown, as he utters the words marking the execution of the real Condemned.
"May the Father of Understanding guide you."
The guns open fire.
..............................................
I got the idea after seeing a Jonah Hex motion Comic where he was to be hanged for something he didn't do in front of a blood thirsty crown.
I thought it would be a good opportunity for a morally grey Templar Rite to turn the town and gun them down. "A Fist Full of Dollars" style. Bringing up the dilemma to the Assassin who was send to stop him from killing a few innocent, who instead witnessed him massacre the rotten residence of a frontier town who quite frankly where not worth saving. Who later realises that simply killing everyone whose like that will stunt humanity's morale growth by denying them the chance to learn from their mistakes.
He also strikes an odd friendly philosophical debate between himself and a Templar Enforcer, who both respect one others dedication to their respectful codes while sorrowful noting that their ideals are too incompatible for them to be true friends.

That's a very interesting interpretation.
Personally I like to focus on the historical aspect of an AC story before creating a character based around it. I feel like a protagonist should at least loosely represent the setting of the story and the lessons that the place and time has historically taught.
I've never been a fan of the "Assassin/Templar moral grey area" plot, but I acknowledge that from a storytelling perspective, it is a decent plot device. Not my personal favorite, though.

I've always thought the Morally grey was always part of the series. I liked how when Altair killed his target he was perplexed by them informing him of their reasoning behind their motives.
They may have been ruthless in their efforts but most (Excluding Majd Addin) genuinely where trying to do what they saw as right. It's just that their way would allow only the few enlightened in control while the rest would obey.
In my story idea the Templar sect see the Assassins as the only group worth respecting while the rest of humanity wallows in ignorance and hate, that the masses are not worth the brotherhoods efforts as they will never learn that their a lost cause while the player Assassin agrees that the majority of humanity can be cruel, its the few who do right regardless of the times and who inspire others to do the same who little by little through the ages help their fellows be treated the way they should, that makes the Human race worth the strife they they put themselves through.
Making the whole thing at its core, a conflict between cynicism and optimism.

Yeah, and like I said, I do think it's a very good plot device to use, as it makes the story much more complicated and interesting and it gets the audience thinking. It's just personally not my cup of tea. My own morals have always aligned with those of the Assassins, and my faith in the Creed has only grown stronger with time. So for me, whenever someone tries to persuade me that the Templars are right, I just can't see it, as everything they say has a counter-arguement from the Assassin side. It would be like trying to convince me that the Nazis in WWII or the Confederates during the Civil War were justified. It just doesn't work in my mind.
Nonetheless, I acknowledge the Templar viewpoint and I realize that they'll always try to justify themselves. And the Assassins will always do the same. The moral grey idea is great for storytelling, but for me personally, I don't care for it.
