It's very lightly that the road to Masyaf would be guarded in modern day by the Assassins because of Altair's library.
It would need protection from what's happening there nowadays

I always figured it would be the opposite. Since Masyaf is currently under the control of the Syrian government, I figured the Templars would be the ones hoarding the Library, and the Assassins would be trying to claim the city back.

Before when the Templars controlled Masyaf they found a door that could never be opened, and technically found nothing in their eyes And left, so no point in them focusing on it. As for the Assassins wanting to preserve and protect it would go down to not only the apple hidden in the library. But the rich history and value it holds to the Assassins. I believe the Assassins value that more then the Templars.

Right, but Abstergo already went in and took the Masyaf Apple. I figured the Templars would want to hold Masyaf just to mock the Assassins by preventing them from having it. All that history and value and the Templars won't let the Assassins near any of it. I dunno. That's how I always figured it.
