Description
I've been drawing - a lot of kaiju lately.
Just one of several redraws/redesigns that I've been working on. Once I've finished I might go into more explanation on them all.
EDIT:
Okay. Explanation time.
Erabusis weirdly one of my favorite kaiju that never ended up being made. I guess it's just the overall story the monster is involved with in the unproduced Godzilla lore, along with Redmoon and Halfun (Hafun? Hunfun?), her mate and child, respectively. It's a strangely sad story, which is probably why it never made it to film, but we did end up seeing it, in a way, in the 2014 Godzilla film from Legendary, which seems to recycle and repurpose a lot of things from Godzilla mythos, used or otherwise. It was interesting seeing the MUTOs not only being these weird combinations of previous Godzilla foes, but also having the sexual dimorphism and overall story arc that Redmoon and Erabus did.
There are only a couple of concept arts made for this movie, and I tried very hard to stick to them, but also combining the best features I could from both of them into a single, suit-friendly design. Mostly, it resembles the bulkier design you see in one of the pieces, which itself resembles the suit it was going to be based on (weird story, read into it: Erabus was going to be the suit of Daigoro's Mother from another kaiju film, Daigoro Vs. Goliath, retrofitted to be in this Godzilla movie), which I also pulled elements from. I also tried to tie the designs of Erabus and Redmoon closer together, even with the sexual dimorphism, just to drive the point home that they are in fact from the same species. Erabus is heavily armored, for example, or at least has these interesting bumps and ridges on the suit, and I worked that into the Redmoon suit as well. Erabus also has ears, which I gave to Redmoon as well, who did not have ears in the original design. I won't go into everything because, weirdly, there were a ton of design choices with Redmoon and Erabus, so many I can't remember them all.
In the Redmoon piece I did, I talked about how I tried to make the wings look both feathery and scaly, and I wanted to do the same thing here with Erabus, only with her mane. I like the idea that the scaly reptilian armor becomes soft proteins like hair or feathers, or something between the two, and I hope that becomes obvious when I ink it.
In any case, here's Erabus. More on the way.
Should I draw Halfun? I might draw Halfun.
