I've been drawing - a lot of kaiju lately.

Just one of several redraws/redesigns that I've been working on. Once I've finished I might go into more explanation on them all.

MINOR NOTE: This is actually an OC creation of mine. Granted, yes, it's based on pre-existing characters (credit where it's due, Godzilla is owned by Toho), but this is definitely something I came up with myself. It's part of a pitch/fan-fic that I worked on for a while and have a soft-spot for that I finally got around to drawing again. I would actually like to know which version people prefer, because there are two versions of this one that I'm not sure which to choose between.

Okay. Explanation time.

I still wrestle with this kaiju, because sometimes I feel like I might have wandered into an area of poor taste. I never want to do anything that people would find offensive, and I would hope that if I had someone would tell me. But this kaiju has kind of been hard to shake, since I liked the idea, but if it's a darling I have to kill, it might as well be this one.

In any case...Ganzilla/Malignus/Name Pending is literally meant to be a Godzilla that grew from a tumor extracted from the original (or the current) Godzilla. I was fascinated mostly by the idea of a kaiju growing from a teratoma (which are...gross...and not a thing I would recommend looking up on Google even for reference pics) and playing with the recognizable shape and silhouette of Godzilla, but really trying to stretch and distort it. The dashes of Godzilla, clearly taken from the original design, but remixed in a horrible, horrible way. A lot of these current sketches are based on a previous design that is probably still up on the site, and while I tried in the past to make that design asymmetrical (gotta make ol' Guillermo Del Toro proud), it didn't quite look asymmetrical ENOUGH. I'm trying to take the design into new, more horrifying directions, if I can, ones that are more fitting of its origins and inspirations, that I hope to reveal soon(ish).

Two things I'm trying to keep: the mouths. The big long gash on t he neck I've always been partial to, but I'm downplaying it a little in newer designs. The ribcage mouth, on the other hand, is a personal favorite. I like the idea that this tumor-Godzilla doesn't strictly speaking have a typical circulatory or nervous system like the original Godzilla might have, or any of the typical anatomy you expect from a normal creature: like, for example, it might not have a brain in the head, but it might have neural tissue spread throughout its body to cobble together something similar to a brain, with consciousness and intent, etc. Similarly, I imagine that the mouth and the throat don't actually lead to a digestive or respiratory system, and similarly, whatever system that allows Godzilla to typically fire his atomic breath weapon...but maybe the more direct path is through the chest, so that this tumor-Godzilla basically just fires it directly out of his horrific hole where its lungs and heart should be. For better or worse, I'm keeping that in.
