Welp...this is one I came up with quickly and then just as quickly abandoned. I was really hung up on that big mouth idea.
You can kind of see how I imagined it would work. The mouth would sort of trap-door up whenever it needed to be opened, out of the chest and torso, which...I guess is an interesting visual, but not very useful or practical. Probably would look pretty ridiculous in action.
Having said that...I did like experimenting with the smaller face in the position it was, because it reminded me of how the eyes are positioned on the top of a crocodillian head. I leaned into that and tried to make it make sense, at least to me, but...I just don't think that this is enough.
More recent design choices I like much, much better...
