It was a scrapped Godzilla design from early TriStar production, its script was much closer to the Toho spirit, originally meant to be directed by Jan De Bont, featuring a Godzilla that had much closer resemblance in both character and design. In the old script, Godzilla was going to fight a new, original kaiju named "The Gryphon" and the climax was going to take place in New York. All of that was chucked out the window when Sony execs started meddling with production because they thought "nobody wanted to pay money to see the real Godzilla" and because it was "too expensive", even though the piece of shit by Emmerich that they end up making ended up being twice as expensive. De Bont was a real Godzilla fan and would've made big bucks with his version, Emmerich wasn't and the movie failed because of that. www.scifijapan.com/articles/20…

At this point, what is there to expect from them? They just made The Emoji Movie and bombed very quickly, you can't walk around without feeling ashamed after a stunt like that.

Yeah, Stan Winston's Godzilla (StanGoji?), while having a different origin story, had the spirit of the Toho Godzilla and actually had resemblance, it's a million times better than Zilla, a kaiju that was 100% the opposite. But you can "thank" the Sony execs. for meddling with the production claiming "nobody would want to see the real Godzilla", and that dickhead Emmerich wasn't any help either.
