WELCOME BACK TO SAUCEZ REVIEWZ: POKEPASTAS MARATHON!!!

Pasta Name: Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver

Publish Date: 2012...?

Description: After Angie's younger brother Blake gets sent to psyche ward from an unexpected freak out and destruction of his gameboy cartridges, Angie goes to investigate the antecedent by playing his Silver version that was hacked with a GameShark and the game progressively becomes more unsettling the more she played it.

Fun Fact: there are a variety of different versions of the sprites made for this pasta

Highlight: the frostbitten Pokémon sprites

Quote: "I'm so cold..." -Gold

So this is one of those pokepastas that I would consider semi-popular where it does have a bit of a following but didn't catch on as much as pastas like Pokémon Dead Channel, Creepy Black, and Lost Silver did.

And one strange thing about this pasta are the varying and mixed opinions about this one in particular and I mean it's very mixed, some say it's good, some say it's bad, some say it's unique, some say it's cliched, the list goes on...

But now it's time to hear my thoughts on this diverse-opinioned pasta along with a brief summary of the story too...

I will point out some of things people have criticized this pasta for as I summarize the story. for example, some say it takes elements from Lost Silver, but like I said before I won't deduct points if the pasta takes elements from others and still executes them in a way to make them a bit unique in their own little way. Also, half of this pasta is with the real-life segments while the rest is about the game.

So the story starts off with our protagonist named Angie and her younger brother Blake and they grew up with Pokemon together as they played the opposite versions together with each generation (mostly the early gens).

As the years went by, their gameboys got old and they had to replace them and their cartridge "finally" gave out, so they picked up new copies (the pasta literally says finally like if they were waiting for the cartridges to give out but that's just a nitpick) also, do cartridges really give out like that because my older siblings had the original super mario land games and link's awakening and they were their childhood and they passed it down to me and I played them for some time and they still work to this day. doesn't affect the story but something I'm curious about.

Anyway, they played their Pokémon games until R/S/E came out and they said... those games... were.... LACKING... compared to previous gens?!

WHAT?! Gen 3 introduced the best Pokémon ever, Milotic and you think gen 3 is lacking?

It's a SPOILED PASTA!!!

End of the review. Worst pasta ever. Goodbye!

Kidding. Just kidding xD

I'm not that salty.

Besides, from their perspective, I can probably see why they may think it's lacking because well for example kanto has 8 gyms, johto games have 16 gyms and hoenn goes back to 8 gyms.

So they go back to gens 1 and 2 and Blake gets a GameShark - it's an adaptive tool that's used to provide cheat codes for gameboy games

And the gameshark trashes Blake's Blue version, Blake loses all of his process in that game and Angie said they would get a new copy. Angie does warn Blake about using the gameshark, "that thing will kill your game, you know" but Blake ignores her warning.

It's quite the build-up. Also, one thing I'm impressed about is the fact that Angie plays her gameboy color outside, I remember it was almost impossible to see the screen from the sunlight reflecting on it. Thank goodness for the gameboy sp's.

Error: the pasta says the gen 1 stuff is too nostalgic to get rid of, so Angie restarted gold and Blake restarted silver. Gold and Silver are gen 2. Oops. xD

Now for the climax of the real-life segments...

So a couple days later, angie needed help with the elite four on her gold version johto's elite four isn't that tough to be honest but okay xP

Angie came back home from a 24-hour visit at her friend's house and wanted to see if she could trade with blake for stronger pokemon. after all, blake was cheating with using the gameshark.

She notices there are pieces of blake's other Pokémon cartridges on the floor in the hallway to his bedroom, angie walks up to her brother's bedroom door and opens it to find out that blake is sitting in his room all pale and frightened.

She asked if he was okay. blake responded with "it was awful" "oh god, white everywhere and then black" angie hugged him to cheer him up until blake felt the GBA that was in angie's pocket as he screamed and grabbed the GBA out and throw the GBA towards the far wall. angie checked on the GBA and the volume as the Pokémon theme played which caused blake to scream again and he started charging towards angie with a hammer to destroy her GBA. angie ran out to protect her GBA. blake was sent to a psyche ward afterwards because nobody could figure out what was going on with him. During angie's visit, blake asks her to go to his room and get rid of his silver version, gameboy, and gameshark. he sounded weary and desperate like an old man on his deathbed. "Promise you'll get rid of them," Blake demands. "okay, I promise" Angie replied.

So she then finds the cartridge and gameshark under his bed with a notebook of all of the codes blake used. She notices one code scribbled and crossed out and it was called "Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver" and she was about to read it through the paper using the sunlight to see the code for it and curiosity got the better of angie. now I know this would make people eyeroll but if I had a brother who went insane allegedly over a game and told me to get rid of it, I'd be curious too.
Angie knew to use the easter egg - snow on mt. silver gameshark code was because her brother mentioned about white and black and she assumed that he could've referred to 'snow' and how she thought that was strange because it was august and 90 degrees out which made her assume that 'snow' referred to the code.

She made it clear she was going to risk something in her life and assumes a bad fate awaits her in the game, so she plays the silver version that blake told her to get rid of. She also said she was playing the big sister role which I thought was kind of cute.

So now for the in-game segments...

Unlike my past reviews, I'm going to show screenshots of the game based on this pasta and I did edit in cleaner sprite work into them because it's really interesting and it enhances the experience. Credit to Lazy Blue on YouTube for gameplay footage that I screenshot (because I couldn't get the game to work) and credit to Mibevan for the clean sprite work that I edited in for better quality.

So it starts off with the game not loading properly and all she could see was a white screen until it faded in to make the game look like there was static and angie looked clearly and notices she was on the Mt. Silver map and there was no sound in the game. And the file had Name: BLAKE, the dex was mostly filled and the time was 999:99. She assumed that it was part of the side effects from the gameshark messing up the game like it did with blake's blue version.

Before I go on, I got to appreciate the unique idea of having the haunted game be caused from a GameShark code instead of the usual "game was found already haunted when it was found or purchased by the protagonist". It's more of an original setup to the pasta.

So angie looked through blake's team which had a typhlosion, meganium, feraligatr, pidgeot, lugia, and tyranitar all level 100. One thing she noticed about the game were the colors being all dull and grayish-blue color. She commented that they almost looked frostbitten.  So, in attempt to get out of the cave, she went out the exit but noticed an invisible wall blocked gold's way and the text says "I can't turn back now."

So, does she proceed and not try other ways to escape?

Actually no. She does try other ways. Finally, a smart protagonist! That's certainly something refreshing to see in a gaming creepypasta for once. It's a good change of pace.

She tries to used Pidgeot to fly out of there but the text says "I can't fly in this." (referring to the snow, which I forgot to mention that she eventually realizes the static is suppose to represent SNOW on Mt. Silver) so she tries to use an escape rope and the text says "I can't go back anymore." She tried making Gold go back down Mt. Silver, only to be interrupted by the textboxes saying "I can't run away." "I can't go back down." "I can never go back." gold had to keep climbing and scaling up Mt. Silver.

I agree with her that those textbox dialogues would be bone-chilling if I were in her position.

So she makes Gold walk up Mt. Silver and she notices that Gold was walking oddly slower than usual and he became slower the more he went up Mt. Silver as a textbox appeared saying "I'm cold".

SUDDENLY...

A textbox appears saying "Meganium has died..."

Angie checks the party and saw that meganium had a red X over them in the screen where you can check all six of your Pokémon at once. She tries using a revive but the text says "It's too late".

Angie didn't check the summary status of meganium and continued until the text said "Pidgeot has died".

She checked their pokemon and their status this time and wishes she hadn't because she came across these...
sta.sh/02phf6t6b5n
sta.sh/01kvmyh64sko

The sprites were mangled up and they were a bluish-gray color with solid black eyes as if they were missing and some of their limbs were missing too. Despite being so frightened by the scenes of the frostbitten Pokémon, morbid curiosity got the better of Angie and she progressed as more Pokémon in her party died too

"Feraligatr has died"
sta.sh/04frob37vqc

"Tyranitar has died"
sta.sh/01q1ge09c005

"Lugia has died"
sta.sh/0ybmx9w9r8z

Only Typhlosion was remaining despite looking affected by the cold with 6 hp left.
sta.sh/0psz3jkjts0

So she gets to the summit of Mt. Silver and Red isn't present but instead a pokeball is there.

A burst of static noise was made when Angie made gold investigate the pokeball as a battle occurred.

The battle was with a wild Celebi who was also frostbitten along with Gold's battle sprite now and before Gold sent out anyone, the Celebi uses perish song.
sta.sh/02bs0m2poaby
hmm... a deformed Celebi that uses perish song around a deformed gold, where have I heard that before? but this time, Celebi uses perish song against gold

If you play the game based on this pasta, a very loud and haunting sound is played for this part. I think it's supposed to represent Celebi's perish song. yeah, to make your ears perish. xP

So the screen fades black and Angie thinks the game must be sending her to a Pokémon Center for when all of your Pokémon faint, right?

Wrong. Gold appeared in a cave in Mt. Silver instead. The team still remains the same Everyone's dead except Typhlosion with 6 HP remaining.

But this time she checks the trainer card and this shows up...
sta.sh/01uqz88apf09

Gold looks sad with tears in his eyes. It cost him an arm and a leg... and a hand and an eye.

So, Gold could only go one direction in the cave and text would pop up saying "It's so cold" "Mother..." "I'm sorry" and "I feel so cold..."

Eventually, Red is shown in the cave and it goes into battle. Surprisingly, Red wasn't deformed like everyone else was, except for his Pokémon... So, instead of Red sending out his usual order with Pikachu being first in line, he sends out Venusaur for his first Pokémon and they were frostbitten, and at lv. 0 with no HP.

sta.sh/09v205ibu5o

One thing that's strange is in the written version of this pasta, it says "no Pokémon made a sound" while in the game based on this pasta, the Pokémon make a very distorted and honestly bone-chilling version of their respected cries. I guess they wanted to added more chills for the game.

Venusaur uses the move struggle and it does 1 hp of damage to Typhlosion and then the text says "Venusaur has died." So, they pretty much died from the recoil damage of struggle. There was no text asking the player to switch out. Well, all his other Pokémon are pretty much dead as the pasta stated, so that explains it. xD

Red popped up and said his usual catchphrase "..." and then switched to his next Pokémon. It does this for each individual Pokémon Red has. So, next is Blastoise and same thing, Blastoise uses struggle and dies from the recoil damage as Typhlosion takes one hp of damage from it.
sta.sh/0h9qk2m2jx3

then Charizard
sta.sh/01qc2dn6kqnh

then Snorlax
sta.sh/0ugpt9sd8h2

then Espeon
sta.sh/0lo2db2x0g1

But it's until Red gets to his last Pokémon...

Pikachu...
sta.sh/01wqb4i7hv5c

Angie states that the Pokémon on Red's team got more and more disfigured as they went on Pikachu terrified Angie the most out of all of them. Me too honestly. He had half of its limbs missing, his eyes were solid black holes, his tail was messed up, one of his ears was missing, but the worst part was his unnatural ear to ear sinister smile that terrified Angie the most. I agree with my friends that I type out these reviews for these pastas in the Discord servers that Pikachu wins for creepiness, but Espeon is a close second.

Instead of using Struggle like all of his other Pokémon did, Pikachu used Pain Split as both him and Typhlosion die. I don't think pain split works that way in the games but whatever...

Red pops up as if Gold won the battle despite it being a complete draw between the two and this time, he was disfigured.
sta.sh/0no2kpydf3q

In the overworld, Red says these final words... "It's over..." Angie pointed out that Red doesn't even speak in the games, but he said those two words.

The screen goes white as one more textbox pops up. " used DESTINY BOND"

Suddenly, the screen flashes from white to black as a loud screeching noise can be heard from the gameboy.

Spoiler in the game version: you get a jump scare of the Pikachu at this part, epilepsy warning on that part though.
sta.sh/02abwc8pbumb    Yup, you get CreepsMcpasta's mask. xD

So, Angie takes out the possessed cartridge of silver version and throws it in the garbage can that they coincidentally had out in the street for trash day that same day, and Angie gets her yellow version and puts it in her GBA only to see the welcoming, friendly, and adorable Pikachu she knows and loves on the title screen with his ears twitching and the actual pleasant and normal smile on his face to relieve her from what she just witnessed. I don't blame her honestly.

So in the end, she still plays Pokémon games while her brother no longer plays them anymore even after getting out of the psyche ward. No protagonist dies in the end. Well, except for Red and Gold as the game represents that the Mt. Silver and the cave are supposed to be a metaphor for Red and Gold's Hell as they can never leave it. But, at least there are no creepy Pokémon coming to life and kills the protagonist. So, points for not going down that cheesy path and for having an original ending for once!

My thoughts:

Well, after going over the story and analyzing it. It's honestly pretty good. Sure, it's not flawless but still good. It did aspects pretty well, especially the ending and the reactions of the protagonist. I like that the protagonist didn't completely freak out and that she can still enjoy Pokémon despite the terrifying experience from the messed up Silver Version, even if her brother can't find the appeal of them anymore. It's something you'd expect to do if you were there as a child. You're either being absolutely scared from it due the shock or curious to see how it ends. It's a balance of one person freaked out to the point of going to a psyche ward and one person who was a bit afraid but kept it balanced with making good decisions.

What is this pasta criticized for?

For one, people asked how come the sister didn't go insane unlike the brother? well, she did state that she was the older sister and I would argue that usually people are more emotionally stabled the older they get. plus, maybe the brother has something that triggers him that doesn't trigger the sister. maybe loud noises or flashing lights trigger him. And it depends on how young he is as those images may have traumatized him much worse.

To be honest, the thing that bothered me more was why did Blake destroy all of his other Pokémon cartridges but not destroy the one that allegedly made him go insane or destroy his GameShark? Maybe he was too afraid to go near them? Why would he destroy the others to begin with? Those aren't the ones that caused him harm. I mean, it makes it clear that it's the same exact silver version and not another copy with the player being named Blake and with a hacked team with lv. 100 Pokémon and modded moves. You would think he'd at least destroy that one first. If he was too scared to touch it, he should have been too scared to touch the others as well.

Another criticism is the Lost Silver vibes you can get from this pasta. Yes, it has a deformed Gold, a deformed celebi that uses perish song, and you fight red with a Pikachu with an unusual facial expression, but I think just because it has elements from other pastas doesn't make it bad.

One critique I do kind of agree with is the part with Celebi wasn't necessary and felt out of place. It could've gone without Celebi and just had Red there to begin with and would've made much of a difference. Was the Celebi there to send Gold to his Hell since Mt. Silver was a metaphor for that like he's in purgatory at first? I don't know. Celebi doesn't makes too much sense as it's a time traveler, maybe Mew or someone else would have worked better. But, that's just a nitpick.

So, what's my final rating for Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver? I was going to say that it's going to get the Fresh Pasta rating only by a hair, but now that I think about it and I reviewed it with you guys, it really deserves to be called a FRESH PASTA because there is so much to like about it. :3

It does a lot of things right and it's proof that gaming pastas don't have to be cliched trash and that the protagonist doesn't have to be naïve or dumb to be realistic. It doesn't fall for the overused "the Pokémon was behind" or the "a cursed cartridge bought". And it has a smart protagonist, good tension building, provides enough creepy factors, the sprites are haunting, the pay-off is good, it gets blood and gore right, and an overall satisfying ending. And there was I don't know, EFFORT put into the pasta with the visuals. xD

So, wow, two good pastas in a row. Can we get three good pastas in a row? Well we'll just have to see.

Rankings for the PokePastas so far (from best to worst, top to bottom):
1.  Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver – Fresh
2.  Hypno's Lullaby – Fresh
3.  Lost Silver – Dried
4.  Creepy Black – Dried
5.  Pokémon Dead Channel – Spoiled

1 Fresh Pasta | 2 Dried Pastas | 1 Spoiled Pasta

I changed it a bit from when I first reviewed this in the Discord Servers and I think Snow on Mt. Silver is slightly better than Hypno's Lullaby. xD

So, why do I think Snow on Mt. Silver is better than Lost Silver?

Well, I think Lost Silver had a very good story but just wasn't that scary and lacked the creepy factors that Snow on Mt. Silver had. It's called Creepypastas. Sure the fanarts for Lost Silver can be disturbing but we're talking about the original source material here. Both pastas have games made for them and I can find Lost Silver's interesting at best while I can get actual chills from Snow on Mt. Silver's.

Would this pasta lose points if it was in blake's perspective instead of angie's. definitely, it would've hit cliche territory because it would ONLY show him freaking out over a game, probably make poor decisions in the game from being scared unlike angie did, going to the psyche ward, and had him say he will never play games ever again. and I'm with you guys on how angie was such a smart protagonist in this pasta. well it probably would've gotten a "meh" rating because the effort with the sprites and playable game would've still saved the pasta from being a "mediocre pasta" and the combination of angie's perspective and being a smart protagonist really bumped it to a "good pasta".

And one more thing, people could argue that having the game become disturbing or haunted from a gameshark code would lose its credibility because let's be honest if there was a code that could make sprites disturbing in a pokemon game, no matter how much people try to make sure nobody finds out about the code, there will also be that one person who will spread the code around to troll or scare people. and if people didn't find out about the code through public information, then they would be those people who would eventually find out about the easter egg through hacking and going through the game's data files. I mean people know about missingno and the reveal of Luigi's model in Super Mario 64.

But I did said I wasn't going to criticize pastas based on their realism unless it's really ridiculous to the point where it's worth a mention. And this still is a good pasta and part of it is because I still think the gameshark code idea is unique.

End of review.

Now excuse me as I need to find a way to grow my arm back and turn my skin back to normal and find out how Astarte (the Milotic's name in my cover arts) can get her jaw back... (referring to the cover art) xD
