Description
This is a character I'm planning on putting in a personal project. I did a lot of concepts and studies to try and get a design I'm happy with, so I decided to compile my favorite sketches of "Baba" into a single piece. I always would like your feedback!Related content

Do you have a cat yourself that you were taking the poses from because everytime i look at it all I can see is y cat from home, Spencer, He's fat and fluffy and exactly like the middle one on the top.
The are gorgeously gestural! I love how sketchy they are and you just really seem to understand cats. Looove it!

Yep.. my gf and I are proud kitty-parents! The character of "Baba" is modeled after one of them. I was going more for capturing the attitude than the physical appearance.

You've got some wonderful sketches here Erin, some wicked character coming accross in some of these studdies. From the sketches here it would seem that Baba is a pretty snooty cat! Perhaps kind of lazy and not terribly easily amused. She doesn't seem mean or too arrogant however, which is often tricky to pull off with cats. From the design point I'm intreagued as to weather you're looking to actually animate this charcter? - or is she for an illustrated project? I'm curious because of all the furr in a few of these sketches could be a lot of pencil milage for a drawn character design! I love the second two red and pencil sketches on the top left though, some really nice shapes in there. My only other comment is I initially though she was a boy cat, perhaps because of her chunkyness/scruffyness? \:] - Fantastic work as ususal Erin!

That's too weird...Baba is what I call my cat. It's sort of a lazy way of saying baby.

It's just a name I made up for the character.. In real life, this one's nickname is "the queen".

Wow, this is just so amazing for conceptual ideas. I think you draw the best paws and poses ever. ItΒ΄s just totally stunning! Envy Envy envy... ThereΒ΄s just so much emotion in the poses and it all flows very nicely. I can kinda see the figures moving by themselves if they were in an animation. Wow!

I get the idea that every cat believes itself to be supreme over all others.. hehehe.. "Baba" is based on one of our cats, and she is indeed "more of a cat"! Glad you like the sketches!

My personal favorites are the three red and black line ones, the expressions are really clear and the style is really fluid feeling.
I also like the one in the lower right hand corner, the cat-bed one.
Just curious, how long has it taken you to get the design down?

I don't really have an exact amount of time.. I've been drawing the cats for quite a while. This particular character has just evolved gradually.

love them dude. I'd say that the two lower ones, the one that's holding the mouse and the other one that looks "proud" or pissed off or something, should look a little more limp. I love how you drew them, but you didn't quite get the softness of the movement in.

I love how she's so fluffy and full of personality, and you really emphasize that in the attitude of her poses. Especially three of the middle sketches there, like the one with the mouse, the "Huh??" look, and the grey one with her back to us. Makes me wanna pet her!
*goes off to find own kitties to huggle - who promptly run away!!*

That's so good! I'm horrible at cats! Never know where to start. I don't really know what I'd change, but then again, I'm nowhere near professional either. I will say that I like the sketch of him with the toy mouse best though! X3
