Never go out beyond the daylight where it’s frozen and dead
Where the suns scorch the sand like fire and living things squirm everywhere you step
There are monsters in that dark place,
They look much like us
But twisted and wrong

Pale, their color the shade of a bloated corpse
Long, fangy snouts and devilish ears
They’ll tear you apart to make stew
They’ll steal you away for their evil gods
If you stray beyond the twilight, you’ll never to be seen again

They chatter and mimic our words to trick you
They’re nothing but our own evil reflections
They have no souls
They can’t see the stars
So behave, the monsters like bad children best!

Pre-Contact(but not prehistoric, it’s complicated) lellian school.

Lellians and medessians are separate but very closely related species, similar to lions and tigers, or humans and Neanderthals. They can even interbreed, although the offspring are generally sterile(particularly male hybrids, females less so).

They rarely encountered one another, seeing as most lellians’ pupils don’t dilate so they can’t see in low light conditions, and medessians live mainly in the south arctic night. Nonetheless, there was a ton of hostility between the two species for a long time(until they discovered they weren’t alone in the universe and put aside their differences to attack random aliens). Lellians are more instinctually xenophobic than medessians, but after a few unprovoked attacks it didn’t take long for medessian culture, if not biology, to become equally hostile.

Much of this prejudice has faded on Lequin in modern times, although by human standards there’s still a ton of discrimination. Oddly enough, it’s on their major colony Wrestis that anti-medessian sentiment has been most strongly revived.

The darker lellian is probably the offspring of a slave captured in some war by that pack. Not a slave herself, or else she’d be off doing some menial task instead of learning tribal lore with the other camp child.
