Description Note~
I hate these. |D

They're such a pain, usually one ear will turn out perfect, and the other will fall off at the slightest provocation. They can't be sold either because people have such different ear shapes.

Also, they hurt to wear for a long time.

Still, I got a request to make a tutorial, and I do get quite a few favorites on them, so why not..? =w= (Although it would have been nice if Model Magic was cheaper. Damn craft stores send out 40% off coupons then put everything in the store 30% off so you can't use the stupid things. Assholes. )

I tried adding extra pipecleaner to make it more secure, but it didn't work and I cut the excess off.

I know this is an old post, but I want to ask. Is it possible to put this kind of ears onto a headband for higher positioning? Or are they simply to heavy?
Thanks for a great tutorial! I really like the ears, although they look a bit more like coyote ears.

I think I know of a way to help you out on how to make them more secure... Ever heard of "Wire Elf Ear Jewelry"? If you use the same method to hold them in place as it is to hold the ear jewelry, then in theory it should stay put. I've made a pair of the ear jewelry and they stay in place like no body's business since I've ran and jumped around wearing them with my friends out in public!

I hope this suggestion helps you make these stay better since these ears of yours are amazing and if you did mass produce and sell these, you'd make a great income with all the cosplayers out there in the world. :3

Any tips on how to sew actual fox fur?

There's a fur store in my area that let me have a bunch of scrap, and fox is among them.

Hmm. Anything more specific you need to know?
You can buy leather needles at Joannes, they have sharpened tips to slice through the leather. You shouldn't need them for fox fur since the leather is so thin, but they're good to have on hand.
Other than that, always make your cuts on the leather side with a razor, never use scissors or you'll trim the fur.
If you got a fox face and want to keep the ears, try the keywords 'rehydrating fox face', that out to give some useful results with pictures and descriptions.

Ah, shaving fur - like, making it shorter. I have parts of the main pelt, and want to shear it and sew it together with a small plastic form inside to hold the shape.

Any tips there?

Hmm. I'd suggest not doing that, it'll expose the woolly undercoat and lose a lot of color. If nothing else, try it on a small piece first.

BasiliskZero In reply to Naria-hime [2012-12-30 14:42:33 +0000 UTC]

It's a wire to hold it in place better, with the benefit of being fuzzy so you don't have a piece of metal rubbing against your skin.

I think, perhaps, If you put a pipe cleaner along the top ridge of the ear, under the clay and fur, with a bit sticking out at the end that you shove your ear into, you could weave the pipe cleaner into one of those flat hair clips and clip said hair clip above your ear. Maybe hiding it under your hair. Might help it stay on better, with less weight just on your ear. dunno if that made any sense. XD

I once tried to make some ears like this with the idea of being able to move them when I move my ears and funnily I had a similar process. I used wire to make the structure of both ears and covered them with tinfoil, then I adapted their base to my ear, paying attention they didn't weight to much.
I didn't have more material at that time and they were prototypes but now I can access latex paint so I'm wondering if it could give an interesting result to put layers of it on the tinfoil base.

did you get a better model for yourself since?

i won't try them because i trust in all of what you say and it'd be pointless. but even so, they look amazing!

I must say these are nice, working on an umbreon cosplay I'm thinking of using these for the ears though obviously longer instead of the usual headband. Hopefully I can work them out so that they fit securely. x-x

Oh! And a suggestion having worked with Model Magic and it's wonderful cracking galore after it dries. >_> I personally used clear clay glaze to fill the cracks then painted over with the desired color of acrylic paints. I have tried covering them with more clay and for me at least it either cracks even more or it stands out horribly. Anyways thanks for this tutorial. =3

DarkPoetOfRivendell [2010-10-25 06:59:00 +0000 UTC]

Those are so cute!!
I love that you don't need a headband for them, it always makes the ears look so fake unless you comb your hair over the band.

Ooh, that's pretty damn awesome. But yeah, they look like they'd pinch a fair bit.

I bought customizable fangs for a cosplay, and I can actually feel them pinching my teeth. It's weird. I think they feel like braces. o__o"

I think I might make a pair of these... I have a con this Friday and I need to add something to my Decora outfit.

Now, about them staying in place... Would it help at all if I pinned or clipped the edge of the bases to my wig?

renkurasaki [2010-01-17 05:25:03 +0000 UTC]

If I wanted to change this to wolf ears, how would I do that? (I'm a newb at this kinda stuff and I need to find a good tutorial for wolf ears for my ookami cosplay).
Also, if I use this model magic stuff, is it possible to attach it to a hair pin?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BasiliskZero In reply to renkurasaki [2010-01-19 21:21:43 +0000 UTC]

Um... I guess wolf ears are shorter and not that pointy... And the tips wouldn't be black if the rest of the ear is a different color.

It wouldn't stick directly to the hair pin, but maybe wire connected to the pin and the aluminum base would work. I've never tried it. O: (Maybe I'll give it a shot though, that's a good idea.)

Perhaps using a wire or one of those earbuds that goes around the ear.

BasiliskZero In reply to Okami-Tsukuyomi [2009-06-06 23:56:27 +0000 UTC]

It's for hooking to the inner part of the ear(NOT the ear canal, but the hollow just above the earlobes) to make it fit more snugly.
