Description
he started out as the fish boy. I still like to call him that. XD If i get 10 people who want to buy him I will consider casting him... that's my plan at this point anyway. X3Related content

That's a shame, he's gorgeous XD I wish paperclay was easy to source in the UK, it seems to yield very pleasing results.

Paperclay I make a big blobby shape, dry it out, then I carve and sand away at the material.

Beautiful sculpt! Your work inspires me so much. Thank you again for answering my questions (it was a long time ago now). I'm making BJDs myself these days, can't afford the resin, but I'm mold-making in silicon, and casting in sculpey. I just recently started using paperclay for my originals, and wow! What a difference. It's very clean and smoothable, and I tried it out because you said you used it, and your dolls are always so smooth. Of course, that's due in large part to skill. I'm getting there! Not close to proffessional quality yet, and still having trouble sculpting perfectly functioning joints, and smooth limbs, but seeing your dolls always inspires me to try harder.

aww~ thanks! I'm glad the paperclay works for you. Have you tried casting in Apoxie sculpt by pressing it into the molds? It's a bit harder when it cures than super sculpey. It's a bit more expensive but not by much.
For the limbs, did you try making molds from sculpey of wooden balls and then lining it with plastic wrap and pressing paperclay into it? That's what I do.. I lose some of the roundness as I sand, so I usually press more clay onto the joint and press it back into the plastic wrap lined mold really gently. :3

Oh yeah! I had read somewhere about your wooden-ball technique, and I was gonna try it! But I thought maybe instead of wood balls, I'd just roll balls from sculpey? Then bake and press into more sculpey. The only wood balls I could find were either a little too small, or too big.
Also, I read your tutorial (yesterday) about doing the limbs straight to sculpey, and I ran out and purchased a lovely 12" 1/8 drill bit. I'd tried that before with just long pokey things of varying sorts, and it never worked, because the sculpey warped, and you can't do sculpey around an armature real well. But you can with paperclay, and I've been using that green florist foam stuff for the base armature. Saves having to use a lot of paperclay, too. I'm thinking now of just keeping the dolls in paperclay..... sort of light, though.

With the wooden balls... you can use any kind of round bead, it doesn't have to be wood. Heck it doesn't need to be a bead at all. Check the jewelry section and the toy section. The reason for using something already round to make the mold is because it's machined, it's near perfect. If you make it yourself it might not be perfect, and when you pull out your clay ball it'll distort a little. if the mold is distorted a bit to begin with then you get that much more distortion. But if it works for you and you're satisfied with your product then by all means do it. :3
With paperclay you can bake it at a low temp in the oven to speed up the drying but don't heat the foam. X3 I love floral foam... it's just so much fun. As a little kid I used to steal my mom's and relish squashing it into shapes. XD;;

Thanks! I didn't know you could put paperclay in the oven - that's good to know! I was worried it might melt or catch on fire or something of the like. You are probably right about the foam, it might do something toxically awful if baked. Burning plastic/styrofoam is probably not a good idea.
Went to an anime convention this weekend, saw a lot of dolls~ also, realized that 14mm eyes fit the dolls I've been making. Sweet. Got some for a dollar, too...

Just out of curiousity is it a 1:3rd or 1:4th head? It is very nice and with the right face up could be very fishy yet. Best of luck casting.

Parted lips are super adorable; always see that in adverts, why not in a bjd face? Nice aquiline nose. My favorite feature, too. Another addition to your run of aesthetically pleasing faces.

Well for me it depends. Most dolls with open mouths look kinda goofy! ^.^; Least to me anyway but then the faceups also take part in if it looks good or not. But he doesn't have dainty little lips and giant teethies! Gaah he is growing on me! T_T How much would the handsome head run for IF you do decide to sell him?

$120, like the others. :3 I haven't made him any teeth yet... I still have yet to get to that part. XD He'll probably have an extra teeth part like a unoa or narae.
