My introduction image for the Kaimanawa Challenge 2014 I'm loving Lola and I can't wait to start this story for real!
Story:
Arriving from the round pen, this mare looks confused, but not in the usual way. While another horse might be frightened and concerned, this mare just looks as if she is resigning herself to another hell. She shies away from the humans, which is normal, but oddly enough, she doesn't allow any horses to get close either. The look in her eyes says she is lost and wary of everything that moves. The staff at Riverwood Equestrian tiptoe around this broken mare and give her every luxury they can. They seem to realise she doesn’t like to be around other horses and give her a nice new box. Normally, with a wild horse, they would allow them to live out in the fields, but this mare seems different than any other Kaimanawa they had ever rescued. When shown the stall, this mare ploughed straight into the corner and hid there, ignoring any food or water that was show to her. It would take a lot of work for this mare to trust again. It was going to be Aoife, the head groom’s, job to work with this mare. Aoife had eagerly taken up the role after seeing her friend Amy make such brilliant progress with Flash last year in the challenge. Ever since Aoife had been waiting for the opportunity to work with another crazy wild horse. However, she wasn’t expecting this quiet, scared mare. She was expecting the mare to run off the lorry, scared and bulldozing her way through everything. That’s the way wild horses were, right? Wrong. This mare couldn’t be further from that idea.
