Story:
Lola’s training was coming on in leaps and bounds. Every day Aoife would walk her round the farm, getting her used to different horses and different situations. One day, she even decided to do a full desensitizing exercise on the mare. She bought her into the indoor arena and showed her everything that could spook her. Aoife opened umbrellas around her, rustled plastic bags and crinkled water bottles. She moved a whip all around her body to stop her spooking at them. She even bought in Amy’s little pug, Charlie. The little dog ran up to Lola, sniffing her feet and yapping at her to get her attention. Lola had trotted off at first, wary of the little creature. But after Aoife picked him up and bought him to her, she sniffed the dog and let it lick her nose. When Aoife put the dog on her back, her eyes grew wide, but all she did was turn her head to look at the pug before turning back, satisfied that Charlie wouldn’t eat her.
Aoife had also been lunging the mare and free jumping her on Georgia’s instructions. Lola now knew the voice commands for walk, trot and canter and was becoming much more balanced. They lunged her with tack on so she would get used to the feel of it, but in all honesty, Aoife wasn’t about to stop riding tackless soon!
What was most interesting was the mare’s reaction to jumping. She leapt over the obstacles like she had been jumping her whole life. Which she might have been – the team had no idea what her history was. Georgia had a feeling that she lived on her own because of the way she didn’t interact with other horses, but there were no more clues about her past. Now they assumed that Lola had lived in a place where she had to jump to survive. Perhaps she had to flee from her herd or another foreign herd and had to jump hedges and rocks on her way. Whatever the reason, Lola didn’t seem to mind jumping the oddly coloured poles, in fact she seemed to love it! She jumped over them beautifully. She would leave feet to spare every time she jumped! She definitely had the talent to jump well, so perhaps with some encouragement, Aoife could get her to jump a whole course perfectly.
Whatever they tried with Lola, she seemed to be able to do it. Aoife was sure that in no time they would be counting the stars they won. But what would they win them in?
