Description
this was a struggle! It didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to, but i still quite like itStory:
The whole team at Riverwood Equestrian couldn’t help but notice the change in Lola since she had arrived at the yard three weeks previously. Not only did she now have a name, but they were beginning to piece together her personality too. Aoife would think of a new experience every day for Lola. If it wasn't going to the meadows, it was letting someone new stroke her neck or letting another horse walk next to her without her shying away. The changes had been gradual, but nonetheless, they were there. The mare now let Amy stroke her and let Dreamer nuzzle her in greeting. Amy had been right – Dreamer’s calm personality ensured that Lola was as comfortable as possible in these new experiences. But the biggest change was not physical. The biggest change was that Lola now expressed herself a bit more freely. She would look out of her box in anticipation of Aoife each day and no longer had that haunted quality in her eyes. The constant presence of Aoife had really drawn her out of her shell. The pair really were starting to heal each other.
One day, Aoife decided to groom Lola. She took out all of the brushes one by one and let the mare smell them and get used to the feel of them on her body before Aoife really got to work. The years of living in the wild had left her coat thick, with small twigs and lumps of mud matted into the dense fur. Even with Aoife’s experience of being a professional groom, she couldn’t get the dirt out in one sitting. It was one of the days were Aoife would spend the day grooming her horse when she finally showed the pain that she had been carrying around. She had suddenly collapsed against Lola’s strong shoulder from exhaustion when Lola looked at her with her big brown eyes which were full of concern when Aoife started to cry. She wept into Lola’s now immaculately clean mane and told her everything. Her mother had been struggling with cancer for years and it had finally taken her the week before Lola arrived. She had been looking for a distraction and rescuing and training a wild horse had seemed the perfect plan. Little did she know how much the pain in Lola’s eyes would remind her of her own hurt. Aoife was lost. Her mother had been the one to push her to follow her equestrian passion and now she wasn’t sure if she could do it. Whenever she had doubts about her future, her mother would reassure her that the hard work would one day pay off but who did she have now? She was letting her grief get the better of her, but she didn’t know how to stop it. Looking into Lola’s deep brown eyes she knew she had found a way to let her go. She would be strong for her horse. Her horse, who had been through so much and survived. Her horse, who showed her that she could be happy again and it wasn’t worth shutting out all emotion just to guard from the pain that she felt in her heart.
Pulling herself together, Aoife vowed that she would never let any harm come to her Lola. Little did she know that Lola was vowing the same thing. She would not let Aoife get hurt.
