This is the method I use. His method works just as well.
Edit - fixed bad technique.
Edit again - More typos.

Wouldn't it be easier to create a group with the basic ellipse as vector mask and just put a white fill layer (and the rest) in there? So you wouldn't get problems while adjusting the ellipse. (That's how I made mine back in good ol' CS5 times.)
Like that.

Yes. Yes, It would. This was just my habit of making eyes. I made this fairly quickly for a friend. But yes, thank you. I might make an update at some point.
Also congrats on becoming a VI. Glad to have you.

The portion about clipping masks for the eye accents was a big help. Now if I can just figure out what they did with that option in CS6.

Glad I could be helpful. I really need to get my hands on CS6.

I can tell you a couple of things about it after one vector project.
The shape and color are now joined into a single object in the layers pane. This make just dragging the mask to a group folder impossible (that's as far as I currently know).
I was running into an issue with CS5 where, when removing the fill of the curls in Pinkie's mane, the overlapping "subtract from shape area" ends of the shape would actually fill the brighter pink back in. This is fixed in CS6.
Also the adjustment/fill layer button at the bottom of the layers panel has changed 'slightly'. It no longer applies the gradient, pattern, etc. to the current layer you have selected. It does it to the vast majority of your image. If you get a copy, try it on one of you previous vectors. Horror/hilarity may ensue lol.
Oh and one last interesting tidbit that your mileage may vary on. If you prefer to vector out, say, all of strokes for a character's body the color will 'stick' to whatever the color was of the last shape you clicked on. If you do the strokes and switch colors to the fill without clicking on a group folder or something without a color though. It's still going to be the same color as the stroke.
/rant off
Sorry, had to get that out. Let me know if you want me to expand on something or have a question. I may be able to answer after messing with this version a bit more.

Well paint tool sai can't make vectors per-say. This is a tutorial on how to make a vector within PS which you can infinitely scale, if your computer is good enough, or export to other formats. But it Paint tool works with paths I suppose you could make a perfect eye using this method.

Very nice tutorial. It's similar to my approach aside from the eye contour which I prefer to do from scratch. I should try this method sometime.

"than drag your pupal and iris..." in the description for clipping pupil/iris with the eye white, also dat pupal layer :>
but besides that, nice guide x)
i think i'll check out the technique for the stroke around the eye/eyelashes, because this way seems to be pretty quick and creating a proper result...in inkscape though

God damn my spelling. >< Now I have to fix that darn you! Thanks for pointing it out.
Inkscape has the benefit of snap to path which is an equally good shortcut. ^^

ikr
and the snap to path is actually something new for me, seems pretty neat though. and i love to learn new things in the "wrong" places... i mean, the topic here is a ps-tutorial, not "inkscape for dummies derps"

God, the eyes bugged me before I knew clipping masks.
Tiny typo in the footer: "useful"
Besides, I made .aco files of the color guide so that PS and AI users don't have to mess around with the png template everytime: [link]
(Instructions are included.)
Actually, the show animators aren't working as clean as you do all the time, there are plenty of shots when the eyelash is covering a part of the eye white
You can control the eye gradient more precisely when you use the gradient tool instead of the layer options. just make an empty layer, select the gradient tool, set your gradient at the menu bar and drag the gradient in the picture. That's useful becasue sometimes the gradient doesn't cover the whole iris height.

Bernd01 In reply to Derpwave [2012-06-20 04:12:24 +0000 UTC]
Bah! Thank you for that. Damn my terrible typing.
Thank you! I will defiantly use these. I made some too [link] but the colors are from Kefkafloyd who has some very off colors and they aren't labeled and their not on this computer.
Lol! You used PinkieDash's color guides! That's awesome! I love those. I will so use this. He used the color guide I mentioned to make those as well.
And I know the show does. This is just for perfectionists sake. it also perfectly acceptable to have the back eyelash over the eye white a bit. But this is a neat way to get the point of the eye stroke to match up perfectly with the Eye White without having to use odd clipping techniques.
Also for the gradients, using this method, or Blackm3sh's method keeps the gradient a vector, but if you use the gradient tool in PS it's rasterized (made of pixels). So if you need to make your PS Vector larger later on the gradient will blur. Not very noticeably but it will.
To keep a gradient a true vector in PS format you have to use the Gradient over lay method, like I use, or a gradient fill layer like Blackm3sh uses. And can also move the eye gradient around in your shape by clicking and dragging it with your mouse with the layer style window open. I'll add that bit.
To keep your method and stay a vector you can simple instead of using the gradient tool add a fill layer there and put that inside of a clipping path.
Thanks for the feed back. ^^

About the gradient: I guess you're right, I never noticed that since I always scale the image up before vectoring. I'll try this method next time.
Btw, I'm making new .aco files everytime PinkieDash released a few. Background/Minor ponies: [link]

You could always use the ones we recommend in the Vector Club. DP get's his colors from High res color-corrected screen shots. All the colors are correct on the one we recommend except for Applebloom's. But it's cool your using his. ^^

Well I do. I used to take my colors from cc sreencaps as well, until I found the recommended sheet.
After PD published his, I just wanted to make them easy to use for AI and PS users.
(Hint: You can manipulate them easily using a text editor )
