Description
It was a weekend of 'lasts'...Oran Park played host to a round of the Australian Touring Car Championship (latterly for V8 Supercars) for the final time, after 38 years as a fixture on the motorsport landscape.
It was also the venue for the last full-time drive by Mark Skaife, five-time Championship and five-time Bathurst winner. It wasn't the weekend he - or doubtless any Holden fan - would have wanted, with two DNFs in the first two races. However, in the third and final event he fought from the back of the grid up to 12th at the chequered flag...
Here Skaife leads the Beam Team's Will Davison, who's long been rumoured to be replacing him at HRT in season 2009 - cue many tears from me that Davo's leaving DJR...

Nah, he's just a bloody Holden driver.
True words you do speak, Doug. Richo (Senior) and MS certainly did much for the GT-R legend in Oz. Not necessarily all in the positive but it can't be denied either way...

Sweet shot mate, man you can really pick just how hard the cars are working/how much camber they're running by that inside front...

Yeah, it shows massively, doesn't it. It's incredible when you see them frozen in a photo because when they're on the move you have no hope of noticing it. Anyway, glad you like this capture!

The quality of this one is really amazing, sharp and smooth.
The editing suits it really well, a fav for sure.

Jorge!
Thank you so much. I'm so glad you like it, not to mention that I haven't forgotten how to photograph cars. I was really happy with my weekend's shooting - so much so that I think I still shoot racing better than anything else, though I've also had far more practice at this than anything else too...

Just forgot the name of this other street track that's really cool too, was it Adelaide?
I'll be happy to go to any track actually

Yep, that'd be right. I'd still do a real circuit first though, because while street circuits are great for atmosphere, they don't stack up against a true race track...

great shot of a big weekend in aussie motorsport
i watched race one from a hotel room in newcastle before my cousins wedding, and watched the end of race 3 on sunday, with a bundy in my hand
with the end of an era at oran park, and skaifey ending his career, maybe the title should have been "we gather on sunday to pay our respects"
the light is awesome, the car is really sharp, and the background is blurred just enough that it isnt distracting, Great work

Thanks ever so much, Ben. Yeah, it was such an incredible atmosphere on Sunday it was hard not to get caught up in the emotion and enormity of it all. Over both days I made an effort to snap plenty of Skaife, so I was sure to end up with at least a few goodies. This is one of the best...

Oh bugger! Let me tell you, it was the biggest crowd I've seen trackside since I last attended a round at QR (2006, I think). Absolutely insane. Weather aside, it was great...
