Description
Started this ages ago and it came to an abrupt halt, so I dusted it off for another shot.I really liked the sketch stage of this one. (It's not very clear in this view, but I added it to my Scraps here ) There's a lot of hair which I think is why it stalled early on. I decided it was time to face my demons!
In some ways it's quite similar to the Scarlett piece - the angle of the head is almost the same so I'm using the same colour palette and have also used the same background (albeit flipped).
This was my first serious 'hair piece' (if you'll pardon the pun

You're welcome! I hope you find it useful. And although it's over 6 years old, the techniques still apply. That's the great thing about digital work - the main processes never change, just the technology.

I was wondering... is there a specific brush that you use??

I only use the default brushes so there's no fancy brush sets or anything. It'll either be hard-edged, or soft-edged. Sometimes I play about with scattering & spacing the Brush palette. But honestly... there's nothing complex or fancy going on here!

I'm glad you found the WIPs helpful!
Every painting is different so it's difficult to explain specifics about shading & lighting. I would recommend checking out my Tutorials section. Each piece in there, explains a little bit about how I paint. Hopefully that will help you.

Why did you leave out her ear-ring? Or are you going to put it in later? I think it would add a nice touch of elegance to the piece.
I really think you did a great job at capturing her, though.

Oh I added the earring. I completed this one a while ago. The finished portrait is in my gallery.
And thanks. I'm glad you like it.

Thank you so much for spending time to share with us how you did it. I have wondered so much how artists made digital pictures.
This will make it easier for me and a lot of us! Thanks!

First of all, this is so awesome. An instant fave. One thing that's left out is how you do the highlights in the skin on the 2nd-4th frames. Is it a soft brush, what opacity? How do you pick the color?
I'm trying a black and white painting of Ewan McGregor right now and it's driving me crazy. I just don't get the nice smooth, natural looking skin - it makes me want to grab a pencil and paper because I know how to do it that way! lol...

BikerScout In reply to kristymariethomas [2007-02-25 17:00:28 +0000 UTC]
Two choices really:
~ To do the very rough highlights, I use the 'Dodge' tool set to Midtone at about 10-20% opacity.
~ When I'm concentrating on getting the colours right I choose a very light, almost white skin colour, and use a large soft brush at 5-10% opacity.
If you don't want to select this colour by eye, use the eyedropper on the reference image, clicking the lightest area of the face.
Starting out with black & white digital portraits is a good way to start, especially if you're still getting used to the tablet. You only concentrate on contrast rather than colours aswell.
Looking forward to see how you do, Kristy!

This is Photoshop CS2, but you could easily do this in an earlier version since I'm only using basic tools.

I only use graphics tablets these days - Wacom Intuos2 at work, Intuos3 at home. It's a real godsend. I wouldn't even consider trying to do anything with a mouse these days.
