Description I'm getting better at this whole sawing thing. An ammonite kind of thing made because round cuts totally kick my ass and I needed practice.

1/7/05- Updated (and better) photo added. Made a few changes to the actual item itself as well. Soldered half jump-ring on the back and added a bezel-set jade cabachon in the middle. Also added swanky snail shell shaped claspy thing. And gave it a bit of a nicer finish.

Hey, that's funny, looking at your own faves and finding a piccies you've never seen before ;] I have to say the old state touched my more because it was closer to the stuff I made myself. (Hey, I might be back to doing jewellery! ) Anyway, the green grass is a good contrast for the silver, and also goes well with the green stone.

yeah, plus the grass is where I usually find snails. or would, if we had any here. Sadly, it's too dry.

And yeah, I'm alot happier with it now, even though it took me two classes to get all the stinking firescale off.

Hey Kate, I love all the jewelry work that you're doing, it's awesome and congrats on the Daily Deviation So nice to see you explore something that was never really given to us in high school either. Haha as you can tell I don't go on DA very much, only once in a while to check out my brother ... anyway, have you ever thought about earrings? or are they too fussy?

bionic-dingo In reply to Vincci [2005-06-04 06:44:57 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks. Though god knows why they chose this thing.

I kinda wish it'd been offered in high school. They'res a few projects that are easy to do without pricy equipment. I've yet to try earring, but mostly because it means I'll have to do something twice, and I have a hard enough time getting it right once.

And I'll be sure to check out more of your brother's gallery. It looks really good so far.

Isn't it cool that these little fossil shells are so close to the golden mean spiral?
You've got something going here I look forward to seeing how you play with it.
I would love to see this design domed; I think it would make your already nice design really pop. It would also be cool to see some play with the texture as well.
Ever hear of cuttlefish bone casting? I'm putting together a tutorial to be posted soon. If you have the means, this design is SO conducive to this process!
And think about the chain too. Don't forget about de poo widdow chain. There's SO much you can do with that to really takeyour work to a whole new level.

You've got a good sense of composition and definately a natural talent with the saw. I can't wait to see what you do in the future!

bionic-dingo In reply to generationwednesday [2005-05-30 04:11:24 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I've heard of cuttlefish casting, I've actually wanted to give it a go for awhile now. Unfortunatley, I lack a home shop (I've been working in a college shop where they have just about everything. I'm being spoiled)

and I don't actually where alot of jewellery on chains. I'm actually allergic to alot of them and it gets uncomfortable. but I'll learn how to make them in a couple weeks, which should be fun.

and thanks for the comment!

generationwednesday In reply to bionic-dingo [2005-06-01 17:49:34 +0000 UTC]

I can relate to that, it's taken me a few years to get my own shop set up. Fortunately, my school let graduates use the studios the first year after leaving.

What school do you go to? I went to Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland Oregon.

That's too bad about your allergies. Are you allergic to silver as well as things like copper and brass? When I was in school, I put gold posts on a few pairs of earrings for a lady who was allergic to silver. She looked better in gold anyway, so I guess that's a little luck.

bionic-dingo In reply to generationwednesday [2005-06-03 03:24:32 +0000 UTC]

well, I'm allergic to nickel, so basically anything with nickel causes an allergic reaction. I can't wear a whole lot of storebought jewellery because 9 times out of 10 when they say "nickel free", they're lying bags of crap.

and I'm attending the Alberta College of Art and Design.

ynahteb [2005-05-29 01:50:38 +0000 UTC]

what techniques do you use? when you said sawing, is that as in using a hand held tool or a machine? This is so amasing, i'd lov to know more about it. Even though it's not even close to my field, i find the work fascinating. well done.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bionic-dingo In reply to ynahteb [2005-05-30 04:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I use a handsaw for these. It's a bit like a hacksaw, only much smaller and the blades are about as thin as a piece of mechanical pencil lead. I break a whole assload of them, generally.

you do the interior areas by drilling a small hole and threading the sawblade through before securing it in the saw.

And if it does fascinate you, I say give it a go. It's great fun and the basic stuff is easier to pick up than you'd think. I've only been doing it forabout 3 weeks now, and I love it.

This is a wonderful shape for a penchant, and it's been so perfectly sawed/filed. Did you design that yourself? Reminds me of the time when I did jewellery from silver.... meh, I wanna do it again!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bionic-dingo In reply to Ratafluke [2005-05-30 04:27:31 +0000 UTC]

thanks! It was done off a little drawing in my sketchbook. I had a few other shell designs, but I liked this one the most.

and I will admit I cheated on the outside. I just roughed it in with the saw and let the belt sander do the curves. The inside cavities were all done by hand, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ratafluke In reply to bionic-dingo [2005-05-30 04:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Well, with a big file the outside curves are easier to do than the inside curves - and you can do those well - so I wouldn't call this cheating but saving time ;]
We just had a little drill, no other machinery, so I polished all my works by hand. Do you have that polishing machine because just because it's quicker or does it also a finer polishing than by hand?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bionic-dingo In reply to Ratafluke [2005-05-30 05:40:25 +0000 UTC]

(Well, it's not really mine, it's the college's machine, they just let me use it. )

I've never actually polished anything by hand, but the machine is capable of polishing something so it's almost as smooth and reflective as a mirror. Though that finish scratches super easy and shows fingerprints like nobody's business.
