Description Skeletal reconstruction of the specimen CM 1594 of Daeodon shoshonensis, the most complete specimen found yet, it was originally the holotype of Dinohyus. It's a large animal but based on the type being just a bit smaller and most of the other (few and fragmentary) known specimens being about the same or even slightly larger, CM 1594 appears to represent the "average" fully grown adult.

Entelodonts are flipping scary. Not only are they tall with a large body and head, their jaws can open 109 degrees, and they can crack bones with those jaws which are powered by huge muscles.

Mira, use tu esqueleto e hice este dibujo de daeodon, no es el tipico entelodonte de ficcion parecido a un reptil, me lo imagine mas como un gran carnivoro

Hello,
I noticed you have published this under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License. I just want to double check that this is indeed what you intend?
I would like to add this to the Wikipedia page for this creature, as it currently lacks one. Are you ok with this? Here is the Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daeodon
Thanks for your time.

It was intended, specially because I do want to add it to the Wikipedia article but I was waiting until I redo it from scratch, if you think it's ok as it is now, you can add it, we could replace it later when I improve it.

Very cool. One of my favorite prehistoric mammals. Although I do miss when it was named dinohyus, much more fearsome.

this isn't a very important question but
how fast do you think daeodon could run?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bLAZZE92 In reply to kirkseven [2015-10-12 00:28:58 +0000 UTC]

I suppose as fast as a bison or buffalo given their similar body size and length and proportions of their hind legs, so about 50-60km/h (assuming the reported speeds for bison and buffalo are accurate).

I guess it could have hunted from time to time then.

As a big entelodont fan, I must ask, any estimates for how much this specimen would have weighed in life?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bLAZZE92 In reply to DarkGricer [2015-07-23 22:59:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm not aware of any in the literature, I've seen guesstimates of ~900kg based on similar head-body length and shoulder height to bison of that weight but I think the longer legs and much bigger head of Daeodon inflate such measurements when compared to a bison, anyway that's probably a decent upper bound.

Alright thanks. Kind of a pitty that there are no professional estimates out there.

SameerPrehistorica [2015-04-16 05:49:42 +0000 UTC]

Is this the accurate one ? Mostly it is mentioned as 6 ft at shoulders but few comparison images shows it as 7 ft.

bLAZZE92 In reply to SameerPrehistorica [2015-04-22 20:32:53 +0000 UTC]

Shoulder height and proportions are about right, the height of the mounted skeleton is similar too (177cm according to Peterson 1909), the only possibly bigger specimens known are teeth but there's enough variation that they are probably not good enough to estimate the body size of their owners with certainty.

I'm currently updating the ones that are already up but next it'll probably be Arctotherium angustidens but only because it'll be heavily based on Arctodus, after that, I'm not really sure, maybe Sebecus.

Así es, aunque hay ciertos dientes fosiles asignados a Paraentelodon, Entelodon y Neontelodon (aranetelodon?) que podrían indicar que también alcanzaban la talla Daeodon.
