Description This large, North American Paleocene mammal has been well known since before 1933. Often referred to as an early version of the later Cenozoic giant ground sloths, I find it reminds me more of a long tailed bear or even a giant skunk. Patterson (it’s describer) and Simons (in 1960) thought it might have been semiaquatic due to its highly mobile forelimb and laterally compressed tail. Possibly. Whatever it was doing, it would have been a fascinating animal to behold.

It looks somewhat like a bear.

Some shapes in their skull reminds me of pinnipeds, but the rest is very giant sloth like.
