Description Named by Cope in 1872 and illustrated by Osborn in 1898 with a photograph of a mounted specimen, this is one of the best known Paleocene to Eocene mammals. Dozens of specimens of Coryphodon have been found and collected revealing that it lived in herds of sexually dimorphic males and multiple females and calves. It probably lived like modern hippopotamuses, grazing on aquatic and terrestrial plants, while retreating to the water for protection and to keep cool. Coryphodon has a very small brain and was probably immune from attack by most predators.

Fantastic work! really is a robust creature, like a combination of bear and hippopotamus.
