FEMALE EMPOWERMENT FOR THE WIN

Copious amounts of Christina Aguilera’s single “Not Myself (Tonight)” + Sailor Moon ended up in a drawing of Beryl dancing her way to a new sort of womanhood. And the more I listened to the lyrics, the more I found Beryl all the more suitable for such a song, since it had several underlying female-freedom undertones under all that sexual beat.

No female villain I find dominates quite like Beryl in Sailor Moon; after all, she ended up from a shy, jealous servant to a powerful monarch of the Dark Kingdom, with four military men and hundreds of youmas under her thumb (or whip?). And although Beryl can be frightening, lately I’ve been finding that she’s been growing on me as a symbol of such female liberation, achieving success through all odds, surpassing the power of even that of the four male Shitennou, while still embodying some of that more elegant and playful feminine side, releasing that power for a moment of normalcy. So here she is, from servant to monarch of the Dark Kingdom, showing a side of her that no one else rarely sees, indulging in her womanhood.
