Description My first tutorial, EVER.
And I'm so excited that it's done yet terrified because I surely made mistakes and typos and more mistakes

And note that english is not my native language so I can't express myself as fluently as I would in finnish.

Anyway~
This tutorial is about Paint Tool SAI basics that I could think of when I was constructing this. I most likely forgot to mention a million things~
Also this is kinda just tutorial practise; I will be making coloring and drawing tutorials later(And I really mean LATER) and they take so much more time and effort~

Still, hopefully this helps somebody~

"Where can I get this awesome program?"
This is the official site, I think: www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
You can download a 31 day trial version, but after that you'll have to buy it.
Piracy exist, but I don't know where.

tutorial, my oc SaiΒ©Me

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know that the easy pattern can be done by clipping group. I'm completely self-taught with both photoshop and SAI so I've just developed my own ways.

The preserve opacity is the same as opacity lock. (:
Are you using an linework layer? If so the preserve opacity doesn't work.

im having problems with 'smooth lines'

i use the pen tool and it never comes out smooth for me. ._. i look up tutorials but none really tell me how to fix that. i even tried setting it to what the picture in your tutorial had.

thats my problem and i hope you reply. c:

Try reducing the edge hardness/hardness of the pen tool. You can find it by clicking the "advanced settings" tab below the pen settings.

Just draw it thicker at some points. Take the pen tool and make the line wider.

Woah, this was such a helpful tutorial xD I think I learned more reading this than when I was drawing a turtle for fun on sai (or would ever learn by trying to figure it out myself lol) xD I think after reading this layers make sense because I always put my layers on in the wrong order (or never locked them xD wow, so useful). Thanks for making this tutorial! I love your art and your tutorial! Also, your English is perfectly fine!!

Thank you so much for the tutorial ^^

I was wondering, have you done a tutorial on things like using the magic wand?
I've seen people use it to do coloring stuff but I'm not sure how to use it well >.< Like, I get it but I wonder how people change the color in it.
This might be a stupid question because I THINK you covered it already in here but yeah >.<

BloodlineV In reply to kpoplovah4evah [2012-11-18 23:10:41 +0000 UTC]

I actually didn't mention the magic wand, because I don't use it myself. : D
You should probably ask from someone who does use it.

BloodlineV In reply to FlamesofFireLily [2012-11-11 14:32:51 +0000 UTC]

You can also create the same look by using the "clipping group" tab in the layer options. (:

and how to colour the skin but no erase the line art

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to komikush [2012-10-13 07:21:55 +0000 UTC]

The opacity lock can also carry the name "preserve opacity".
Put the lineart and skin color on separate layers and put the lineart layer on top.

hmm...to have a perfect sketch, it means u need to have a tablet ryt?

BloodlineV In reply to jam-marvin [2012-09-27 20:54:29 +0000 UTC]

Well drawing with a mouse is hell. :'D
But of course, you can draw the sketch traditionally and then scan it to your computer.

Bloodlinev, I must say, thank you for this tutorial, it has helped me alot.

Jam-Marvin, how old are you? From the lack of grammar and "txt tawlk" I'm guessing 10-8. I'd appreciate if you would speak correctly and not use degenerate idiot language.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to Allikyo [2012-09-27 06:28:37 +0000 UTC]

You need to have a tablet with a pressure property.

I cannot find the [None] Options in the textures in my SAI. what do I have to do to make them appear?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to shinhwalee [2012-09-20 21:01:04 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you have a different version of SAI and the none option is there but with a different name. P:

but what do i use for the lineart??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to Silver-Sprite [2012-09-11 14:16:14 +0000 UTC]

The pen tool. ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Silver-Sprite In reply to BloodlineV [2012-09-11 22:23:40 +0000 UTC]

Okay thankyou! for the loooongest time I kept using the lineart layer rather than the normal o.o
also, how long does it take getting used to drawing from scratch on the tablet? I scan my traditional and then yeah, so I'd like to know c: cause if you made this tut, then your art is amazingggg

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodlineV In reply to Silver-Sprite [2012-09-13 16:20:22 +0000 UTC]

I actually think it's easier to sketch on the computer than on regular paper because the "undo" button.. : DD
But I guess if you started to drawing the pictures from the scratch with the tablet now.. you'd probably be confortable with it in a week or two, depending on how much you draw daily. :3

If your tablet has a pressure property the thickness of the line should vary automatically. c:
