OK, so maybe this isn't so much a tutorial as a big "How I Color" meme. But hopefully it'll be useful to someone, or if not, then at least the colors may be nice to look at.
EDIT:I ran out of room in the tutorial, but here are a few things to keep in mind as you color:
1. In section one, I mentioned using your lightest pencil to sketch. If you don't have a set of graphite pencils, that's OK--you can use a regular No. 2 pencil. I do that a lot. Just be sure to keep your pressure really light, and erase each section before you begin coloring. That's a pain in the butt, though. I'd advise that you invest in a set of graphite pencils anyway. I found a Kimberly graphite pencil kit with 10 pencils, a sharpener, and a white eraser for about $7 USD at Wal-Mart in the craft department.
2. The trick with wood is using not-really-sharp pencils to get the base color, then keeping the pencils super-sharp when you're drawing the grain. The grain doesn't have to be perfect--just make sure the lines are all going in the same direction.
3. I ran out of room, but doing the hair is like doing wood--you want to keep the pencils sharp, especially when you're doing the shadows. The shadows are important--they define the "clumps" of hair.
Any other questions? Feel free to ask!
I'm allowing this for download on the slim chance that someone actually wants this as a handy reference. Please don't steal it!!
Yes, I use cheap Roseart colored pencils. I've never used anything else. They're $5 at Wal-Mart for a box of 72. In case anyone's interested, here those colors from lightest to darkest:
I can't remember which ones I'm missing and it's driving me nuts. If anybody knows, PLEASE tell me! Thanks to ~bunniegurl for digging through her pencils and discovering that my list did not include Pine Green or Raspberry!
EDIT: I fixed a spelling error and replaced the last picture to better illustrate the skin tone.
Anyway, enjoy!

I know this is a ridiculously old tutorial, but is there any way I can get more info on how you do wood, like what order you put things in, whether you're hatching or doing tiny circles, blending mediums used?? I really like the way your wood comes out, and I'm doing a lot of medieval type things, so I really want to get a handle on doing wood better.

Thank you for doing this! I have a pack of 70-something RoseArts plus 24 Crayolas just sitting on my desk, doing nothing, while I happily use my Prismacolor markers (and get high off the alcohol xD). This has made me wanna pick my pencils back up and see if I can do anything with them. Thanks again!

After going through my set of pencils, I found that there's two I have that aren't on your list: Pine Green (which would seem to be between Celery and Mint) and Raspberry (which looks to be an odd mixture of red and brown). On that same note, I seem to be missing my Black, Poppy, Green, and Ocean pencils. xD (Thankfully I have a Crayola Black and Crayola Green.. though I'm not sure if those'll work in their places.)
I also have a Silver and Gold in my RoseArt pack, if you'd like to include them (as well as an extra Orchid, which has what seems to be the "old" RoseArt logo on it xD).
Hope I helped!

Hahaha, nah, I'm just a crazy girl who likes colors!
I've gotten that reaction several times--but really, with a little patience and practice, Rosearts will do what you want. Thank you so much for the compliment, it made me so happy!
