Description Phew. Finally done!

I couldn't go over everything in this page -- without ending up with a 3mb monster . So, if you want to know anything else, just ask in a comment .

I've been pretty dead around here lately... I'm in the last two weeks of Spring Term in school and my instructors started to spring final projects on us, so, yah... I've been busy with that .

BUT, as soon as June 15th comes around, I'll be going crazy with the art. Believe it!

This is a very helpful tutorial, especially in its simplicity. One question, though. In Steps 1 through 6 you show the process, but not which tool is used. Are you using a specific brush, or even a gradient method or...dangit, I forgot the term. Um, when you right click on a layer and it says "do wanna do layer effects, like an overlay and stuff-ness?" Did you use that application, or another specific tool, or was it all done manually? If it was, in the case of brushes, did you change your opacity to get that smooth transition of color, or were you just really, really careful?

Or I might just be confused on your use of Gradient mapping. Do you use it on each individual section, such as a petal by itself, or is it a general thing?

I don't know if that made sense or not, but...*shrugs*

*takes out a paper and pen for notes*

Thanks very much for the comment .

I probably should have restated somewhere in the tutorial that I was using the same tools from part one (a regular brush -- the one that has the softest edge).

For the coloring, I didn't use any blending modes or gradients*, just the brush, and I kept its opacity at 100%. Hehe, I didn't need to be especially careful either; if something didn't look soft enough, I would just alt+click (eyedrop) a nice midtone and smooth things out.

*What Gradient Mapping does is replace the dark-to-light range of colors in the selection with your own custom range. For example, if you had colors going from dark-red to bright-yellow, you could gradient map it to become dark-blue to light-green, or even black to white. I applied a gradient map to the entire flower after I was finished because I didn't like it's original color range.

Hehe, to be honest, this isn't exactly how I color anymore, and I really ought to release an updated tutorial .

I'm glad you thought it was helpful though .

Wow, I was looking for an easy way to color with soft shading that also allowed the colors to be edited afterword. This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to try out the gradient map technique.

The tutorial itself could have used a few more progression examples. But I know you already know that from previous comments.

Thank you so much!

Hehe, I was thinking of doing a new tutorial with better progression plus some of the new things I learned since the old one. I'll see how that works out .

Ah, you were asking if this tutorial will work for that program...

Well, if it supports layers and brushes, I suppose the same thing, or something close, could be done in Photo Impression . I don't know anything about that program though .

I assume you use a tablet?

Blue-Ten In reply to chiisai-kotoba [2008-04-13 06:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks . Yes, admittedly, my coloring process in this tutorial is a bit complicated. I have simplified it a bit since then, though .

And, yeah, I use a tablet. Can't imagine working without it.

Oh yeah also I forgot to say that the tutorial is pretty nice ^^ (although I wish I could've seen how you colored the skin and dress a little more in detail)

And I'll probably end up getting a tablet later (but I need to improve a bit before I do [though it'll probably be a while before I can get up to your level])

Blue-Ten In reply to chiisai-kotoba [2008-04-22 21:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks . Hehe, when I decided to make the tutorial, I was already partway through the picture. Next time I'll make sure to be much more in-depth about it .

I think just getting a tablet can help improve anyone's computer art skills, so unless the price is in the way, I'd suggest investing in one .

My dear blue-ten you are entirely too hard on your self, I think you are a very gifted artist and I covet your skills. Thank you for this tutorial it helped me alot.

I do recomend adding more details about which tools you use, like it looks as though you used the smudge tool on her hair but i'm not sure.

P.S how do you do your linearts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blue-Ten In reply to ShuiYue [2007-10-01 02:18:47 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thanks very much . I've always been my own toughest critic -- and can't help voicing it sometimes. But thank you .

"I do recomend adding more details about which tools you use, like it looks as though you used the smudge tool on her hair but i'm not sure."

Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind for future tutorials/explanations, if any. However, for coloring this, the only tool I really used was the brush (varying sizes).

"P.S how do you do your linearts?"

Normally, I just scan the lineart and fix up any problems in Photoshop, then start on coloring. However, if the scan is really sloppy, I use the pen tool to make entirely new lines, such as in this picture.

Wow, this whole gradient map thing is totally new to me. I'm gonna need to test it out!
For my first CG, I've been going over it continously with a different color tone, or with a different opacity. >_<

Hi! Love your tuto, I'll try that asap.

Just a thing I've read on other tutorials that you may know but whatever. In Photoshop instead of doing Ctrl+click to select "non transparent" pixels, you can check the option to lock layer transparency, which will block you from coloring transparent pixel.

It's not that useful, but may save your Ctrl key

Blue-Ten In reply to Louskan [2007-07-19 20:47:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much .

O_O I never knew that... So that's what those icons/buttons are for . Thanks a lot . I could definitely make use of that, and it seems more reliable than ctrl+clicking.

And don't worry about being inactive, it happens, especially during exams and finals. :3 Can't wait for more art, though!

It's a pretty nifty tutorial. Though I stupidly have to ask.. when you talk about "Alt+Click" what exactly do you mean? What else do you have to press besides the Alt key. *fails at life and brains*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blue-Ten In reply to ThunderGoddesKino [2007-06-09 06:32:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks .

Alt+click means to hold alt on the keyboard and click on an area within the canvas in Photoshop. This lets you use the color picker (dropper) while you're painting. It's basically just a shortcut .

ThunderGoddesKino In reply to Blue-Ten [2007-06-11 04:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, I see! ... You know about 10 seconds after I posted that comment, I realized what it more than likely meant. I'm such a dingbat, lmao XD;;;;
I tried it in OpenCanvas but it doesn't seem to have the same effect. Oh well, it should work on my Photoshop Elements 2.0, at least when I get it re-installed <<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blue-Ten In reply to ThunderGoddesKino [2007-06-12 10:51:24 +0000 UTC]

LoL . Oh! I heard somewhere that the shortcut for the dropper tool in OpenCanvas is Shift+Click. Not sure, though; never used the program myself.

But, yeah, the shortcut works in Elements 2.0 -- which is what I was using before I got CS2 . Still use it sometimes too, since it loads faster on my computer .
