Description This iconic image of the American West, has been rendered by many artists over the years. Each one gives the weary warrior their own special touch. It is one of my Aunt's favorite images, and she is suffering from a tremendous loss right now, well the whole family is. My uncle Bill recently passed on, and it is in his memory, and for my Aunt Barbara that I created my version. It is a mix of Photoshop techniques. The image was created using the airbrush tool, and stacking layers of color, set to different opacity levels, adding various lighting filters and layer effects to create the glow. This is for you Uncle Bill, may you find peace at the end of your trail.

Wow, this is VERY powerful, both in the original image, and your personal version made for your reason. This version is particularly striking, and quite well done. It is also one of my favourite images.
Very nice work.

The soundtrack to this lovely image could be "The Long, Long Trail", a song from the early 1900s. It was my grandma's favorite song.

Well I think you know that I can understand loss (4 people now in 3 years, all close to me) and I think that though time, from the first 'weary oh woe warrior' that death was always an implyed feeling in the piece. This is a good tribute to him I'm sure. ^^.

I love it. You say you made it from scratch, or was there photo manipulation involved? either way, it's great, and very emotional. I, too, hope things look up.

There is one element that is photo manip, and that is the texturing on the moon. Though I have used manipulated photographs for backgrounds, I didn't want to with this piece. I tried to get the moon to look right with color, shading and lighting filters and just couldn't. In the end, a photo of the moon served as the texture needed to make it look like a moon. The foreground is lust layers of digital paint stacked and then flattened. First I made the black silhouette, then the extreme highlights. I wanted to really have it pop out, so I made a third layer and sandwiched it beteen the shadows and the highlight. I used a color that I though would work well with the highlights and the orange glow of the harvest moon. I merged these layers and gave the resulting foreground figure an inner glow layer effect. The final file had three layers, the "sky" the moon, and the warrior. there were several times I thought I was going overboard on the lighting and the inner and outer glow effects, but in the end I was happy. I gave it a sandstone texture in the texturizer, just to make it more interesting.

I should actually get around to writing a step by step of each piece, just to share what techniques, mediums and styles I am experimenting with. Right now I am going back and forth between wanting to do surrealistic color explosions, my comic/anime/manga work and character studies, and just letting my mind wander and my Wacom work overtime (such as with Madness Escapes, Dark Reflections, and Awakening). In the end I don't have one style or medium I am most comfortable with, but I do have my underlying mark. Colors that pop, and contrast...I like vibrant images.
