Description Now that deviantART has allowed use of the search for all users of deviantART, it's best to use this plugin .

---

Just a little plugin I wrote for the Mycroft search bar that accompanies Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape. The plugin adds deviantART to the list of search engines in the Mycroft search bar. To install this plugin simply extract the two files in the ZIP file to the "searchplugins" folder in your browser's directory...

Example: "C:\Program Files\Firefox\searchplugins"

This is a rather outdated plugin, all this does is simply allows you to search deviantART through Google's image search engine. Thus, it's not as good as using deviantART's search feature but it's still pretty good.

This has been tested on Firefox 1.0PR, Firefox 1.0 and Netscape 7.2.
If you encounter any problems please note me.
If you use this plugin, please let me know what browser and version you're using.
You can find the deviantART version here .

Aye, but for the moment it is, and it's a feature a lot of people actually HAVE paid for just to use.
So promoting this damages you business-wise That's all I meant.

Deffinitely not true, this search plugin doesn't work nearly as well as the real thing. And like someone already mentioned; google doesn't index all of our pages, and only indexes every few months. So this search tool, is by no means current. Our search tool is always current....

It's a nice idea, in fact, I have been toying with it before, but ultimately dropped it, because Google Image Search only updates their index every 4-6 months, and the 'Medium' size search still includes avatars etc. while 'Large' size search finds only very huge images (of which there are few).

Does Googlebot regularly index user pages anyway? I see it update the main page quite often, but finding comments is quite hard. Then again, I haven't looked at all robots.txt

bluespeed9 In reply to MattGAllan [2004-11-14 01:07:14 +0000 UTC]

If you took the time to read the description, you'd notice that it clearly states that it uses Google's image search. The reason behind this is quite simple, deviantART only allows the deviantART search to be used by subscribers. Thus, I wrote this pluging as an alternative to deviantART's search. Yes, using the Google image search is nowhere near as good as using deviantART's search but I'd like to think it's a hell of a lot better than nothing. Another thing, the reason why it misses so much in the searching is because Google's update of deviantART's images is very infrequent, there is nothing I can do about this. Finally, to draw attention to your obvious distaste of Firefox, once again, had you bothered to read the description, you'd realize that this plugin works with Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape.

Please, take time to read and reason before you post comments, it will save us all a little time.

1) Firefox is not Netscape
2) Internet Explorer was declared a "mature product" by Microsoft over two years ago and will not be updated until Windows Longhorn is released. The most recent Firefox release was earlier this month. IE does not correctly support (if at all) any of the W3C (web) standards, nor is it capable of the extensible XUL plug-in architecture that Firefox is built on. IE doesn't even support 32-bit transparent PNGs!!!!! Talk about ancient!

If you like IE, fine. But there's no way you can call IE archaic over Firefox.

Karolisl In reply to Autumnmist [2005-08-13 17:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Hail Firefox! IE has success mostly only because people are dumb; they use what they get by default. Although FireFox is better than IE in all possible aspects... Yet most people don't use it.

Autumnmist In reply to galad [2004-11-30 03:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Whoah! You can like IE over Firefox, but 1) Firefox is not Netscape... and 2) Internet Explorer has not been updated for *TWO* years. Firefox supports all of the newest W3C (web) standards and was most recently released earlier this month. You do know that Microsoft declared that IE is a "mature" product and won't be updating it anymore until Windows Longhorn is released.

In any case, IE can't do Mycroft so this cannot be ported to IE.

Yeah, but why go to the trouble? Just use the search bar in your browser... Makes sense, doesn't it! you don't have to type [link] , then type site: [link] , so it's a better method.

I don't agree. He is a subscriber; thus supporting deviantART. I think he is just trying to help the deviants who can't get subscriptions, or those deviants who have an attitude towards us admins, such as yourself. The search feature is not subscriber only because we are being greedy. It is subscriber only because it crashes the site when it is used a LOT, which occurs when anyone and everyone can use it. Making it subscriber only decreases database load; considering there are 1.2 million deviants and only around 5000 subscribers.

We are working on a new search engine; it will be available to everyone. It is not as easy as some think, it takes time.

ookay... wait up. Doesn't this look slightly like a joke to you kevin? sorry if you took it the wrong way, and thanks for the indepth comment, but just to get this straight, i dont hate admins, or mods, being, and having been, both, on various sites before, so i understand that, and maybe its just me, but most of the 'anti-admin' comments aren't really serious are they? i can't find this particular board now, so if anyone could give me a link to where i posted this that would be great , i have a feeling the rest, or previous comments of mine are slightly jokey if thats possible?

anyway, i AM sorry if you took it the wring way and i've offended you, and im genuinely surprised at the ffedback that particular comment has recieved, so yeah, sorry.

Oh and to save double posting, mouseathome2004, sorry in particular to you cos i seem to have got on your tits and been labelled as having a 'non-conformative personality disorder' lol. sorry.

here here! i totally agree, i havent jioned this site very long but i think i have already got the general atmosphere of this site and its not one that comes across as money grabbing or nasty admin-ed (word?). i think this is a great site and i already have managed to get one of my friends to join through word of mouth and probably some more to come. i have no problem going up to a message on here and shouting at someone who has an excessively non-conformative personality disorder and screaming GREAT JOB ADMIN! at the top of my voice. not many other sites would give us the freedom to show our artistic flare in this manner!
