Description
Starcraft 2: Protoss Dark ShrineModeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
The Dark Shrine was originally a tower. At one point it was a very vicious murder-tower, like a Planetary Fortress on uppers. Later it was a repurposed as a detection tower since design was testing the game with all the detection removed from the normal towers. Then it was cut from the game for a short time until the need for a Dark Templar building was required.

I always thought this structure was so different from all the other toss buildings. I mean, I know its dt, but still it sticks out a lot.

Yeah, it never helps when we take something that was intended to be a defensive tower and turn it into something else... herp derp!

It still vexes me that the Protoss Dark Shrine doesn't have any "action animations" when it's researching something. Some of the Protoss automated structures are a joy to watch when they transform during research actions! The Shrine just spines around slowly and twinkles a bit. Not much going on in that area. I also like how most of the Protoss structures assumably look like structures that don't house any Protoss, while most of the Terran structures look like buildings/ships, complete with windows and doors. Terrans seem to take part in everything they build despite having assistive AI, while the Protoss due to being so advanced, don't need as much personal interaction, nor do they need as many buildings to actually 'make' units.

So they were towers then became a tech structure for DT

Ha! I had never noticed that the three triangles were actually heads before!

WHAT?! Pay attention! This is important stuff!
Not a very good angle to show off Protoss heads though...

I always wondered why does it have a different color key from all other protoss buildings (which have a brass look to them)?

This was a followthrough of the theme that Dark Templar art would be more platinum tones. It does seem odd that because it's the only Dark Templar building we cooked up...

i see... yeah, now it makes sense, especially the units: dark templars and stalkers are sort of platinum-blue, while zealots and immortals and colossi are yellow.
nice move!
