During the development of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty several mockup models were made for various Protoss ships to explore various new shapes and ideas. Allen Dilling mocked up a ship which had a unique shape, but was ultimately passed up as the Phoenix and Void Ray became the new featured Protoss aircraft. The mockup however, proved it had endurance once it returned for the idea pitching phase on Heart of the Swarm.
This model was a pretty straightforward polish pass on Allen's mockup shapes and animations. The color scheme was originally High Templar gold, but switched to the Dark Templar platinum during a quick art pass.

I do like the Nezarim using platinum rather than gold and sharper shapes that really shows that even though they are allies, they have a whole agree-to-disagree vibe from the Khali. Although, I do want to ask where is the cockpit located and why the blue accents since the Nezarim's void based tech are green?

The intention was to give the Dark Templar much more identity, so the materials and shapes are deliberately adjusted to evoke that thinking. The cockpit is an issue - This unit was designed to rapidly that the pilot parameters weren't defined when the unit artwork was created.

It's befuddling how unbalanced these harassment specialists were during the Heart of the Swarm Beta. Their abilities even overlapped the Mothership to an extent!

This good unit. MC killed ~10 of CJ herO's probes with one of these in a couple seconds in their MLG game today. I grinned.
P.S. I really like the different colouring on this unit (just gave me an idea for my DT's colouring!)
