About DeviantTidy
DeviantTidy is a set of styles and scripts to improve the layout and usability of deviantART.
Ever since dAv5, many users have been unhappy with various aspects of dA's layout and design. Some decisions on font size, margins and spacing had clearly been neglected.
And so DeviantTidy was written, to claim back much of that wasted space! Inspired by some of janvanlysebettens 's CSS mods for Firefox, DeviantTidy was a very lightweight modification to fix comment boxes and various other assets on dA pages, to make things clearer and more streamlined. Since then, it's expanded to cover lots of other annoyances, big and small, to improve the look and usability of the site, and with a JavaScript interface, it's fully customizable too.
Features
- More efficient Comment Boxes: DeviantTidy reduces the minimum height and margins on comment boxes, and further reduces the size of signatures, so you can see more comments at once. You can also add scrollbars to really long comments.
- Hide and collapse elements: Hide social sharing buttons, 'More Like This' mini-galleries and other bloat from deviantART pages so you can focus on your task.
- Indent guides: A problem that has been around as long as nested comments is the difficulty you face in working out who replied to who in long and complex discussions. With DeviantTidy, just point at a comment to see guide-lines in the left margin, showing you the exact nest level the comment is on.
- Cleaner Forum threads: Thread listings are now easier to browse, with all unnecessary icons removed, and shorter table rows (one line high instead of two, doubling the number of threads you can see per screen).
- Floating comment box: If you want to be able to type your comment on a deviation or journal while looking at the original, without having to constantly scroll up and down the page, this feature allows you to make the reply box float above the page content, following you wherever you scroll. Press ALT+SHIFT+C to activate it.
- Hide thumbnails in deviation sidebar: Reduce distractions by hiding 'more from this artist' and 'more like this' mini thumbnails when viewing art.
- Hide the orange Upgrade to CORE ad in the page header (turned off by default).
- ...and many more!
Installation
In order to use Greasemonkey scripts, you need to install Greasemonkey for Mozilla Firefox, or Tampermonkey for Google Chrome.
FAQ
How can I check that DeviantTidy is working?
When you first install DeviantTidy (or the script component), a dialog will appear when you visit any DA page to let you know that it was successfully installed. You should also see a 'DeviantTidy Options' link under the user menu on the header navigation when you are logged in.
Can I use DeviantTidy with [insert your favourite skin or script here]?
DeviantTidy can be used safely in combination with other custom deviant skins and scripts because it does the very minimum amount of changes required to get the desired effect. In the rare event of clashes in styles or broken functionality, tell me about the issue, and include info about the other mods you are using.

Hey BoffinbraiN, when I have messages/replies, I get some link text next to the counter like this: [link]

BoffinBrain In reply to anonymous-bot [2008-09-05 20:51:59 +0000 UTC]
Guh... That looks like the hyperlink is displaying its HREF attribute after itself. deviantTIDY doesn't do this to my knowledge. Try disabling other styles to see which is the culprit.

anonymous-bot In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-05 21:06:02 +0000 UTC]
This seems strange, but it seems the culprit is the combination of the "href in tooltip" script and deviantTIDY style. Disabling either one solves the problem.
Ill get rid of the script since I like deviantTIDY

BoffinBrain In reply to anonymous-bot [2008-09-05 22:36:37 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that would be the case. deviantTIDY's CSS places the link's title next to the link, and if the script takes the HREF and puts it in place of the title, then that will indeed be what's displayed on the page.

Hello!
Just having some questions about the 3.0 mode here... Well, I can't seem to find the DeviantTIDY Options there used to be in the page's bottom in the previous version anywhere, I wonder if it changed places Also, when I put the mouse over the Edit Settings bar on my userpage (the one with the submission links and such), it changes place, my status and the bar switch places and become confusing
I wonder if that's normal, because it doesn't sound pretty nice to me and I don't really know how to make changes in the CSS
Thanks.

For the userpage link problem, you'd need to change on option, but of course you can't get the options yet. I think the problem is that you're using Firefox 2, not 3. Is that so? I might have to use a different function that's backwards compatible.

Oh, so that's the deal. Yeps, I am using Firefox 2. Back in the description it said I could use it on Firefox 2 and above, so I assumed I could just turn it on, but that must really be it. Then, how do I do? Is there any change I can do in the script to get it to work in my version or do I really need to get version 3?

If you're using the Greasemonkey script, download the script again. I've made it backwards-compatible now.

Do you see "deviantTIDY 3.0" at the bottom? Click that for options.
π: 0 β©: 1
wapy In reply to anonymous-bot [2008-09-05 16:33:39 +0000 UTC]
That's the option that doesn't show. There's no DeviantTIDY link on the bottom this time, though I knew where it was on the last version

Try uninstalling the deviantTIDY greasemonkey script and reinstall it.

I was using stylish But now I use Greasemonkey and I still have some troubles
But I think it's because I'm using Firefox 2

frozenpandaman In reply to wapy [2008-09-08 22:50:18 +0000 UTC]
You either need the extension or the greasemonkey AND stylish scripts.

wapy In reply to frozenpandaman [2008-09-08 23:10:43 +0000 UTC]
Even if I turn them both off, the DeviantTIDY options still apear in the bottom
So I need the two? Well, I am using both right now
π: 0 β©: 1
wapy In reply to frozenpandaman [2008-09-08 23:28:46 +0000 UTC]
I turn it off but it is still on!

frozenpandaman In reply to wapy [2008-09-09 02:02:47 +0000 UTC]
did you install the extension too, possibly?
π: 0 β©: 1
wapy In reply to frozenpandaman [2008-09-09 10:25:03 +0000 UTC]
Well, as it didn't work nicely at first, I downloaded just the stylish. Then, as it still did not work, I installed the Greasemonkey. And then I installed the extension too.

But then I turn them all off but I still see the DeviantTIDY things around... That's why it is so weird.

I'm glad that you updated this, but I'm kind of annoyed that it interferes with my 'minimize sleek icons script'. I'm also releasing a script that will be replacing that script, and it interferes with that the same way. Is there anyway that you can make it so it doesn't minimize the width between the icons if it already has been minimized? So this doesn't happen: [link] Maybe make the minimizing an option?
π: 0 β©: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Solitude12 [2008-09-05 20:53:25 +0000 UTC]
But why would you need a script to do that anyway? I'm sure Β’mindfuckx already showed you it can be done with CSS alone. JS and CSS aren't going to get along, in general, when they both try to do the same thing.

I know, and I will be completely removing that script once dAMoreApps is released. And I realized that for some reason my styles were doing something weird....I've fixed this for dAMoreApps....sorry for bothering you

Would it be possible to make more (if not all) of the fixes optional? Or if it is, would you have information on how to disable certain changes?
I know I could open the xpi and do it myself but I'd rather not.

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2008-09-05 20:54:32 +0000 UTC]
What would you want to be made optional?

Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-06 03:14:18 +0000 UTC]
Some of the changes like full width items are starting to bother me. I'd like an option such as adjusting the margin.

BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2008-09-06 03:35:42 +0000 UTC]
Oh, well those kind of changes were the original purpose of deviantTIDY, so I don't plan on making those optional - sorry!
π: 0 β©: 1
Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-06 03:44:19 +0000 UTC]
Well, as a web developer, you understand the want for options, yes? I don't want to force anything on you because I can always make these changes myself, I just figured I'd ask. There are other things I wanted different, but I cannot recall what they are at this time.

Fair enough. For those that can, I would definitely recommend the customize-it-yourself route.

I've been Greasemonkey-ing the life out of dA while waiting for the new dT.
It's awfully fun. Like my webcam hiding script. It just removes users webcam (and the box that holds it) so the page loads faster.
π: 0 β©: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2008-09-06 04:47:57 +0000 UTC]
Mmm yes... Or at least it would appear to. It depends whether your script executes before the image has started to load!
π: 0 β©: 1
Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-07 03:03:28 +0000 UTC]
Greasemonkey scripts are executed as soon as the DOM structure is loaded. That happens before images are downloaded.
π: 0 β©: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to Richarmeleon [2008-09-07 10:48:13 +0000 UTC]
Ah, but touchΓ©... Often the images start loading before the DOM has finished loading on slow pages! I find GM scripts can be delayed by up to a second on dA.
π: 0 β©: 1
Richarmeleon In reply to BoffinBrain [2008-09-07 15:03:54 +0000 UTC]
Well, that partly depends on your internet speed and computer speed. My scripts all execute pretty quickly. The longest delay I've ever seen was when I tried to modify the front page of the website. There's a deviation in my gallery that shows what happened after it finally worked. Or didn't work, as the case may be.

Ok, it works fine except that I don't see the deviantTIDY 3.0 option in the footer. I tried disabling Greasemonkey even and that didn't work. Could you fix that please? Thanks.
π: 0 β©: 1
BoffinBrain In reply to necrocerberus [2008-09-04 18:26:52 +0000 UTC]
If the script is working OK then the footer link should be there, for sure. Try uninstalling the GM script and re-installing it.
