my stars wont puff out D: .. I get to the pushing-in of the sides part.. and they die D: .. as in, they make points but stay flat.

I tried thicker paper.. and it worked fine! You just have to hold if from the sides and not the back/front.
I think that's the trick.

It's really the hardest part, remember to use your nails, and don't fold too hard...
