A lot of Avatar fans have a rather intense dislike of Maiko...in fact, I don't think I've seen another couple take so much heat! So, using my patented Booter Logic, I decided to delve into the reasons WHY(constant face sucking aside). However, my logic must have had an off day, judging from the grade it got. :/But ya gotta admit, guys who act like Mai DO get a love of love. Which is maybe why MAO is a good idea...[link]
Now, before you jump down my throat with Reasons Why Booter Is Wrong And Ignorant For Making This, let me just nip that in the bud. I am not promoting ANY sort of shipping, and this thing is a SPOOF. So if you're actually looking for a well-researched and thought out debate starter, look somewhere else.

Well one thing I don't really like about Mai is that she rarely shows any feelings; hardly any passion. I don't blame Zuko getting upset over that.

I really have no problem with Mai in and of herself. Her design is a little strange, but without her, a few of the lines in the series (in my mind) wouldn't exist.

I found the relationship between the two a little odd (more like unfitting). But, I'd say that's what makes it so perfect. It's the sort of thing that goes on in real life. People get with people that others wouldn't ever imagine them being with, and sometimes those relationships turn out to be the strongest.
Kind of like, why would you wanna get with someone you have EVERYTHING in common with? It'd be like having sex with a clone of yourself, only the opposite sex (unless you're gay/lesbian). Or is it because having so much in common means it'd make the relationship easier? (IE, less effort to maintain) LAME
So, while I found it unfitting and odd, I didn't have a problem with it. In fact, I actually like Mai because of those characteristics. And, like a real person, she sometimes steps outside those characteristics under certain circumstances (like when she's with Zuko, she acts all happy and stuffs.)

I have tried to come up with a reason why I hate Mai. Your reasoning that the whole cold exterior and sarcastic wit doesn't work on a girl is possible but if we look at Toph she is similar to Mai and people adore her. We do know however that Toph is capable of saying thoughtful, complimentary things. I have never seen Mai say anything that was deep or a compliment to anyone. She also is apathetic about pretty much everything except Zuko. We are more prone to like characters who have life beyond being the love interest. Mai doesn't. Any character who doesn't serve much of a purpose beyond love interest is prone to being disregarded. We have no reason to care about them since they exist solely to pair a character up with. The loathing for the Maiko pairing itself is on another level. We tend to prefer that our cold exterior characters whom are good guys to be paired with a warm, loving character: Hatori Sohma with Kana, Shrek with Fiona, Ahiru with Fakir in Princess Tutu, Sailor Moon with Tuxedo Mask etc. It is balanced in this way. Bad guy characters can be coldXcold because everything about them is supposed to be wrong. It makes sense that they should be in an unbalanced relationship. Zuko we know to be good so it is unacceptable for him to be with another cold character.

The only REALLY awful thing about Mai? Ditchin' her baby bro. Otherwise, I ain't got a bone to pick with the girl. I like that Mai keeps to herself. And I love her design.
And I think Zuko can be with whomever he pleases. But gosh darn if I don't wish we hadn't just bellyflopped into their relationship like that!

I mentioned this above: she decided to do the smart thing and not have to balance on a tightrope above a fiery net.
The plan was probably simple; get out there, overwhelm the escorts (who are NOT benders and Avatars), rescue Tom-Tom, and keep both. Azula could have just as easily ordered the governor to refuse the deal, and just hurried off with Mai and Ty Lee....but to test Mai's loyalty, she put herself against Mai's little brother. Mai didn't have much of a choice, then. Ty Lee had already dropped the hint that what Azula wants, Azula gets. She does an excellent job of hiding her feelings there, whatever she had.
As for earlier, she said it on "The Beach"--she was raised in such a way that she COULDN'T care about the fact that Tom-Tom had been kidnapped.
Mai's more victim than villain with her brother.
Yeah, I wish we'd had a bit more ease-in to the relationship, but that's what the magazine is for. And it's an interesting start-point, anyway....

I'd rather see Zuko with someone who has a more positive outlook on life. The same goes for Mai. Two people is a swirling pit of emo and world loathing is unhealthy not to mention horrifiying to watch after awhile. I still can't figure out what exactly attracts them to each other. That would help to know.
