A lot of Avatar fans have a rather intense dislike of Maiko...in fact, I don't think I've seen another couple take so much heat! So, using my patented Booter Logic, I decided to delve into the reasons WHY(constant face sucking aside). However, my logic must have had an off day, judging from the grade it got. :/But ya gotta admit, guys who act like Mai DO get a love of love. Which is maybe why MAO is a good idea...[link]
Now, before you jump down my throat with Reasons Why Booter Is Wrong And Ignorant For Making This, let me just nip that in the bud. I am not promoting ANY sort of shipping, and this thing is a SPOOF. So if you're actually looking for a well-researched and thought out debate starter, look somewhere else.

female fans always seem to hate female characters. whether it be that they are jealous of the ink/paint or they are little B's in training.
its how a lot of girls are.
we (females) judge other females. FAR more than males judge males.
male characters can pretty much wipe out the human population, but as long as they are cute and badboyemo, they are loved.
get a girl that is the same way...she is crucified.
i completely disagree with "her looks" theory. there are plenty of female characters that are down right sexy, and are still hated.

Re-reading this reminded me of something. I remembered how I've thought about how people have said that Kataang is no good because Aang's younger than her, and how I know for a fact that if Aang was either taller than her or was the 14 year old while she was the 12 year old, no one would have cared.
And also that Zuko is three years older than Katara, and Katara is two (but technically -98) years older than Aang, And everyone says Katara would be a pedophile by liking Aang, Zuko would be a pedophile by liking Katara. And if Zuko and Katara switched ages, (almost) every Zutarian would jump ship, leaving only hypocrites on board. Same situation if Zuko became suddenly shorter.
I'm only bringing this up because someone said something about the fandom being sexist. I think what I just said proves it

i always thought it was a little boring coz it kind of just happened. if there was more substance before they got together-some kind of story line between them (a recent story) instead of, Mai liked him when they were lil, she still like him, they meet for the first time in years and snog.
but, now that zuko has left, who knows what mai's reaction is to it, and if she'll fight to get him back watev. (which is nice C: )
and i think maybe, Sour attitude+Cold exterior+Sarcastic wit...shouldn't be paired with Zuko...he needs some sort of happy warm person (not necessarily katara (or at all katara >

I joke. It's funny, but you make a very good point. Several good points in fact. Personally, I don't mind Maiko, but I support Zutara (mainly because Kataang just doesn't seem right to me).

Don't forget Toph though. She's got plenty of depth and angst (and fists of fury), and people are obsessed with her. I think the problem with Mai is just that the writers didn't do a very good job of characterizing her. She's too flat and 2-dimensional instead of being emotionally detached from every angle. She's kind of like an empty puppet plot devise to further Zuko instead of being her own character.
She's got some great hair though.

I really like this, but the REAL reason the pairing equals fandom hate is because it gets in the way of Zutara, I myself am a MAJOR fan of Maiko.

Actually, I think Mai is also missing the 'sarcastic wit' factor...or in any case I have trouble remembering her being witty n' sarcastic (or even just plain witty). Mai is also really underdeveloped as a character (aside from that one line from that one cheesy sitcom-esque Beach episode).
Then again, I never understood the whole 'Snape is love' thing and have no clue who Hatori is, so there's a good chance I'm missing something.

Sosad. I pretty much support every shipping ever ever (even if I don't particularly love them, I can almost always see why it would be cute x3), and the fact that I love Mai dearly just makes it worse for me T__T This is the best theory ever, by the way.

I'm surprised you got a D- on this, since I found it quite enlightening. Though I'm a fan of Avatar, I'm not all that familiar with the fandoms, so I was a little surprised such a large amount of people disliked ZukoxMai as much as I did. And was never sure why I disliked the couple so much, but this graph has made it painfully clear. Though I try to support Avatar in all it's canon glory, I can't deny this brilliant fact. Mai would be much better recieved if she was a man.
(Or, for the fanboys, having three ways with Azula and Ty Lee.)

Although very cute and amusing in its presentation, you must be reading drastically different Avatar... err, forums or whatever. Because all I ever see is Mai slashed with Ty Lee or Zuko's evil sister.
Although I certainly agree with the frustrating h8 a lot of female fans have for 80% female characters that interfere with their obsessive slashing (LOL RINOA, etc.), at the same time, I don't think Hatori compares to Mai or Snape at all.
Hatori is quiet and stoic, and he only gives his Mabudachi buddies a hard time (mostly because they deserve it XD). He's not a goth snob like Mai kind of comes off as sometimes (I don't hate Mai and I'm all for MaiKo as a pairing, FYI) or the mostly two-dimensional secretly emo Snape (I hate Rowling, sue me; but I DO have a thing for Snape, go figure).
TL;DR - I LOL'D, THIS IS CUTE.

And yet Zutara is probably the most popular non-cannon pairing out there...
My Theory: Hatori, Snape and Katara are loved because they're attractive. Hatori is cold, serious, sex, Snape is played by RICKMAN, and Katara is growing up to be rather pretty (now complete with midriff).
It's not Mai's gender that's the problem, it's her looks. Mai's not ugly or anything, but I'm guessing that the fans don't find her attractive enough to be paired with their favorite character.
Personally, I like Mai. It was really cute when she was trying to be all supportive. I didn't think she had it in her. She might even ditch the Azula for her boytoy. Now if only she'd ditch the hairdo...
Sorry Maiko fans, but I think just about every other character I've seen paired with Zuko is cuter than Mai. Fans seem to care a lot about that. XD
