A lot of Avatar fans have a rather intense dislike of Maiko...in fact, I don't think I've seen another couple take so much heat! So, using my patented Booter Logic, I decided to delve into the reasons WHY(constant face sucking aside). However, my logic must have had an off day, judging from the grade it got. :/But ya gotta admit, guys who act like Mai DO get a love of love. Which is maybe why MAO is a good idea...[link]
Now, before you jump down my throat with Reasons Why Booter Is Wrong And Ignorant For Making This, let me just nip that in the bud. I am not promoting ANY sort of shipping, and this thing is a SPOOF. So if you're actually looking for a well-researched and thought out debate starter, look somewhere else.

Mai's one of my favorite characters, actually. Her indifferent, dark demeanor is rather refreshing, and a welcome change from bright and bubbly. That, and she's just kickass. I really like Zuko too. Maybe I'm just fond of the villain characters? Well, not villains necessarily, but they aren't the heros.

In all honesty though, I used to hate Snape, but then, when I leanred his backstory and saw more of his character, I loved him. If Mai did something redeeming, I would like her a lot more.

And I agree with your implication that the Avatar fandom can be rather sexist. The saddest part? It's female fans that are perpetuating it. I notice that those attitudes tend to manifest themselves mostly in fandoms for anime/anime-styled shows - probably because the genre makes copious use of the "Angsty Boy" and "Ice Queen" archetypes.
But yeah, I've always noticed that being the introverted, cynical type rarely goes over well when it's a female character. If it's a guy, it's all right because it makes him TALL DARK AND MYSTERIOUS OMG. But if it's a woman she gets written off as a bitch.
Because of course, GOOD female characters must always be happy, shiny, attractive optimists that everyone loves JUST LIKE MY OC IN THE NEW FANFIC I MADE PLZ RATE AND RESPOND KTHNXLOLZ!!!1!
Now with that being said, I find nothing wrong with disliking Mai, as long as there are logical, non-petty reasons behind it. Same for any other character.

But that's exactly why I LOVE Mai. Not only is Cricket Leigh's voice awesome, but Mai's personality has the vague, unmoved attitude that I like.
Robert DeNiro will explain (but the words "cat" and "dog" are replaced with "Mai" and "Ty Lee"):

Then again, I have a Madonna-whore complex, so that plays a part in it.

I totally agree with booter. I would just add that the fact that their hook-up came as totally random and as a slap in the face to many fans, b/c Mai had practically NO character development. Seriously, who can possible support a "relationship" btw. a favorite, well-developed character and one that just... came outta left field? But who knows... maybe this was done intentionally just for that purpose. Maybe this dislike we experience towards Zuko and Mai as couple is something the writers WANT us to feel. Unless something seriously changes, that entire plot twist is unlikely to last.

I actually happen to LOOOOOVE Mai just because she's so sour, cold, and sarcastic. It's great to meet a character who isn't riding an emotional tsunami every once in a while.
