Description My 100th weather deviation! Haha, and it's of TIV2! I know I shouldn't love this thing or Sean Casey so much, but I do! This was the whole reason I watched Storm Chasers on Discovery! Then they brought in Reed Timmer and Tim Samaras while Josh Wurman left... Ugh... Timmer ruins things for everyone it seems. Anyway, that's just my take on the whole situation. I really wish Discovery stuck to the original format of the show, which was the science behind storm chasing, but pitting teams against each other was NOT the way to go. I'm all for entertainment, but when you make it about competition, especially in such a dangerous environment, it's really annoying and becomes too much like everything else on TV. I'm not sure if I'll boycott the show this year because there's a STRONG chance we might actually be on it. After all, we intercepted Dumas, TX, Leedey, OK, and Bowdle, SD with all of them.

On a side note, I did end up eating dinner about three tables away from Sean on the day of the Leedey tornado. Seeing TIV2 up close and personal was an experience I'll NEVER forget! That thing is so much more majestic in real life than any photo can capture.

Okay, I'm gonna get off my soap box now. Thanks for enjoying my storm chasing photos! Hopefully next year's are just as amazing!

You ever do any chasing in Kansas? I'm based in central Ks. I usually just go out to shoot thunderstorms at night.

I've chased in Kansas. Hoping to do some more next year. Actually I'll be out with the COD crew again at the end of May. Maybe we'll run into each other.

End of May 2012? I'll be on vacation in England/Scottland from 5/21/12 to 6/1/12. Out of curiosity, how do you decide when/where you're going hunting?

I let my professor do it. I'm just along for the ride, lol. At least for now. I'm currently studying meteorology at the College of DuPage, so I'm hoping by spring I'll have a better knowledge of forecasting so I'll be able to chase by myself. I made a decent prediction this past summer based on helicity, MLCAPE, vertical velocity at 500mb, vorticity at 500mb & 850mb, and RH at 850mb. I'll also look at hodographs and forecast soundings, it just depends on how much time I have. I'm hoping to get a better understanding of hand analysis next semester because that's what we use a lot on the COD storm chase trips.

Are you conducting scientific experiments, or just taking photos/video?

With the COD crew, we're actually learning about forecasting using models and having discussions in the mornings and evenings before/after chases. We're also learning how to analyze maps that only have the current conditions on them. That's the side of meteorology I personally want to go into. We also take some awesome photos and videos while we're chasing, so that's a bonus. But like I said, we're learning more about forecasting than anything else.

I just read the description and 1st off.. I am insanely jealous. Its ridiculous how jealous I actually am lol. Storm chasing is my lifes dream and next season(May25-June4) I will be out there so hopefully I get to see/do half of that haha. 2ndly, I totally agree with you on the show.. I will still watch it because all of the weather shots that they shot and stuff but just like you said; pitting the teams against eachother was not the way to go.

Anyways.. awesome shot and maybe ill see ya next season^

They're been kinda trying to save themselves with the storm chasing crowd these past few season, haven't they? I mean with the whole Tuscaloosa and Yazoo City stuff... It's funny how a little criticism from the storm chasing community can impact a show this much.

Did you hear what happened last year between Josh and Sean? Obviously you saw what happened on Storm Chasers, but it was the BTS stuff that the chase community only has first hand knowledge of that's very interesting. So apparently Josh got SUPER pissed when Sean pulled that driving stunt that he send out a drunk angry message to the NWS that to this day my teacher still talks about because it's so funny.

That's kinda funny you'll be out that week because that also happens to be the week of COD chase trip 3, which I won't be on unfortunately because I prefer trip 2, but anyway, maybe I'll chase that week with friends. Who knows.

I wish you the best of luck next year!

I need a legend for that response lol. What is BTS(youre gonna tell me and I am gonna feel dumb lol) and CoD is College of DuPage, right? (I am from California lol.. I am just getting hip on all of the storm chase verbage lol) Josh sent a drunk text?! That is so 20 year old girl stuff haha! What did he say to the NWS? You should totally go chasing with friends.. just look out for a car full of 4 dudes that dont look like they belong and has california plates lol.

BTS - Behind The Scenes
You're right about COD.

Yep, I think it had to do with Sean's driving, but I'll ask my buddy Hutch. He knows the story a little better than I do.

I'm gonna see who I can drag out there with me next year, considering that following weekend is my best friend's wedding (Friday the 8th), which I'm in, so I'll probably end up chasing the first half of the week then heading home that Tuesday. I shall see. I'll be on the lookout for you if I am.

They're only out from April through to June, so it really depends on when and where. I've run into them quite a few times chasing. Sean's cool, but I really don't like Reed.

eon-krate32 In reply to BowEchoMedia [2010-12-29 05:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I've noticed. Actually this year like, two days after I graduated from high school there was a huge storm system rolling over Longmont where I currently live when I'm not in college, and I was standing on the side of the road watching the clouds (I saw something unusual...I can't find the photo I took but if I do you should take a look at it) but then this guy in a white truck pulled to the side, put on his flashers, looked at a laptop for a second and drove off. Pretty sure that dude was a chaser, and if he was it would'a been the first time I've actually seen one in person chasing a storm. From what I've seen on the shows Reed can be a little..not hot-headed but maybe a little too excitable?

(On a side note, may I ask you to have a look at this? [link] This was taken in Wyoming early this year and I could'a sworn I saw a funnel forming inside but I couldn't get a photo. Is it possible that this could have produced anything at all?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BowEchoMedia In reply to eon-krate32 [2010-12-29 17:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Don't get my started on Reed. He's the sideshow freak of storm chasing.

I'd love to see this photo you're talking about so let me know when you post it and I'll take a look.

And you probably did see a chaser.

I think the best way to see if there's a funnel in that photo is if you bump up the contrast and levels in Photoshop. That's how I managed to spot a tornado in one of my photos from last year. It was my first tornado, and I didn't even see it until I actually went back and messed with the levels in PS. Definitely worth it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eon-krate32 In reply to BowEchoMedia [2010-12-29 20:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Alright, alright.

I think it's on my other computer, so later today I'll check and see if I can't find it. I don't really know how to describe what I saw except it was a very low but unusually bright cloud formation and on the right side it looked like a funnel that was going..upward.

That's what I thought, but Longmont is in an unusual place just east of the foothills. Longmont is in the rain shadow and it sprawls over a few hills as well, so we don't usually get very much severe weather except at the height of summer.

If I had PS I would definitely do that (I'm too broke to afford it with no job and college to pay for). However I was looking for another photo that I could have sworn I uploaded but apparently I didn't...this one looked like there was something forming, so I'll have to find that photo as well.

I recently watched an episode from season 1, and wow, its seriously not the same show anymore XD
It was really interesting how they used to explain all the science they were doing, how and why, etc. I find it really funny now that all the detail they ever seem go into is "We're doing science and stuff and that will somehow save lives" *back to drama*

Knowing me, i would go to tornado alley during tornado season and i would probably the jerk called Josh Wurman... oh he makes me mad..... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyway, YOUR SOOOOOOOO LUCKY TO SEE ALL THESE STORM CHASER PEOPLES!!!! by the way, did you see Reed at all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BowEchoMedia In reply to RenagadeOrigins [2010-11-23 21:06:53 +0000 UTC]

Don't knock Wurman. He's a really cool guy and does a LOT for the chasing community and storm science. Storm Chasers/Discovery makes him out to be the bad guy when in reality he's MUCH wiser than the other fools on that show (excluding Samaras). I met him at a weather symposium last fall and he's really nice to talk to. He knows a lot about weather and a lot about science. And his presentation was really quite good. Not to mention, the DOW trucks are sooo cool.

Reed's a douche. He's got a monster sized ego. I don't know why people look up to him. That way he chases is gonna get him and possibly others killed. I do NOT advocate his chasing style and highly discourage other people to even try it. I chase with a skilled group of people that do this for educational purposes and keep me a safe distance from potentially dangerous situations. Yes, sometimes we do get into trouble, but for the most part the general chaser population is a bunch of really smart people who keep their distance from tornadoes and respect the power of nature.

Sorry, I get a little testy around this subject, especially when people ask me about Timmer. I REALLY don't like him.

Ive always loved the dow trucks! they look so awesome! i remember in the older episodes of stormchasers when the TIV still followed the DOW around. Now that i think of it, Josh Wurman really isnt such a bad guy.

BowEchoMedia In reply to RenagadeOrigins [2010-12-07 19:29:23 +0000 UTC]

I was just in one last month. Justin and Karen (2 of Josh Wurman's assistants who used to be on Storm Chasers) came to COD to do a presentation on jobs in meteorology and brought DOW7 with them. It was sooooo cool! I took some photos with my phone, but they didn't turn out as great as I would have liked.

I miss the old episodes of Storm Chasers!! Those remain my favorites. I hate that they added Reed because its become a contest between him and Sean over who gets the best storm. Ugh, I hate watching all the drama that's unfolded since then. But I do feel sorry that they both lost their friend, Matt. God, that episode made me cry like a baby.

What?! Really! Oh, that's so cool! I saw it last year. Totally made my trip, lol. But I got a really damn good look at TIV2 when we were in Norman this year. It was parked right outside the freakin' restaurant! Imagine my shock when I saw that, lol. Imagine my bigger shock when Sean was actually having dinner a few tables away from me. Duuude, it was so cool! I totally got blasted by my trip mates, but soooo worth it! LOL.

LOL! Mothers... My friends and I chased yesterday in west-central IL and caught one of the tornadoes that hit Peoria. No photos tho cuz I was the driver and it was getting pretty dark by the time those things finally exploded. It was my friend Stephanie's first time chasing, and she's hella scared of severe weather but she loved it! She wants to go back and chase more.

Thank you so much! I'm currently using a Canon XT with just the regular zoom lens, but I also have a wide angle and telephoto that I plan on putting to use some time in the future. I just don't know when.

soulstrifer In reply to BowEchoMedia [2010-06-07 05:25:08 +0000 UTC]

Lol ^^. I wish I could chase more often. I just don't really like to go by myself. Dad thinks I'm nuts and my friend studying meteorology lives miles away. Oh well. Guess its something that will happen sooner or later.

You are very welcome. Ah I have a Nikon D3000. Mom and dad finally broke down and got it for graduation/ Christmas. XP. I bought myself a 200mm telephoto. Would have liked a bigger one but I deal with what I can get XP. Hope to get a wide angle, a fish eye and an underwater housing too.

BowEchoMedia In reply to soulstrifer [2010-06-07 14:42:01 +0000 UTC]

I hope you do get to do more chasing. I wish you the best of luck when you do.

Very nice! I'm hoping to get a fish eye. That's the last one that I really want because I'd really like to be able to capture more of a storm than what I've been able to capture in one shot. This year wasn't a year for panoramas because we were in and out of the vans so fast and so often. Same thing happened this weekend when we chased west-central IL. No time to even take photos, just drive drive drive and get the hell out of the storm's path! God, that was one of my best solo chases ever! I'll be writing up a blog about it soon enough.

soulstrifer In reply to BowEchoMedia [2010-06-07 19:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Have you seen the new canon panorama shot cameras? They aren't really photography cameras but would be epic to capture an entire storm in one shot and they take as fast as you can move or at least the ones I played with when I went to get my 200mm lens

I have! But I dunno if I trust that software yet. I'd rather be the one in charge of the settings for multi-photo panos. It's not hard to screw up if you've got a tripod. It's not hard hand-held either, but I wouldn't recommend it.
