Description
Due to personal bias, I actually consider this portraiture to be my favorite of C-chan's works. One of his last Intermediate era works, experimenting heavily with multi-source lighting techniques and vector-based soft shading, the image features Windows CE-tan entranced by the humorous antics of Damn Small Linux-tan and her little brother Damn Small Linux-kun.Windows CE-tan is a miniature fairy, ranging in the vicinity of 15 to 30 centimeters depending on artistic preference. This should give you an idea of just how DAMN SMALL the siblings are in comparison to her. No alteration has been made to the original image, but an extra-large export model is available to download to get a better appreciation for the sibling's vantage point. Notice in particular how they're small enough to view the individual cells in CE-tan's wings. ^^
DSL-tan is holding her trademark penguin backpack in which she carries everything she needs (including even her own brother sometimes). DSL-kun is shown having fun with a holographic projection of TuxPaint, not particular mindful that the paint is dripping all over his "seat". Windows CE-tan's blushed smile is meant to be Mona Lisa-like in nature, free to interpretation by the whim of the viewer. Either she's charmed by their incredible cuteness, a bit embarrassed by the role of being the "giantess" for a change, or maybe even seriously wondering if these children are tasty. ^^'

I'm sure you already know or have seen it in the description, but Windows CE-tan is just a few centimeters tall herself... meaning the other two kids are damn-microscopic.

And just as a frame of reference, CE-tan is tinkerbell-sized, you figure maybe around 15cm. That means the size of the DSL siblings is pretty mind-blowing.

oh... there's uCLinux-tan on DSL-kun's shoulder! sooooo tiny.
but come to think of it... I don't know how big uClinux is.

C-quel In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-02-03 05:09:16 +0000 UTC]
Now now, don't get too excited.
After all, it could be said that Windows CE, at its base, is smaller than Damn Small Linux (after all, not many portable devices can spare 50MB of space). Along that reasoning, even Windows 95-tan SHOULD be smaller than DSL-kun, given the lighter specs back in 1995 (although that's hardly a fair comparison, since DSL's 50MB also include a working application suite). But 95-tan is not a tiny little thing, but rather a normal-sized OS-tan who, in comparison to the Damn Smalls, would look 800 feet tall.
Then aside from uClinux, there's also Minix, SliTaz, TinyOS, the various x86 DOSes, eCOS, PalmOS, Windows 1.0, AmigaOS, AROS, Unix System I-III, etc, etc, etc... all systems that are not only smaller in file size, but some that use piddly amounts of memory by comparison. ^__^
So there's a lot more that goes into determing an OS-tan's size, include who it is in relation to other systems of its era and market, and how mature its interface and internal components are. Amiga-sama, being way ahead of her time back in 1985, is depicted as being particularly tall (183cm), whereas QDOS-tan, being a shoddy little thing even way back in 1980, is shown as suffering from stunted growth (<100cm).
And above all else, there's always artistic license... in this case, because the characters are called "Damn Small Linux", it was especially important that they be,... well,... DAMN small. ^____^
Same for Damn Small Solaris and Damn Small BSD.... ^.^

Nowadays it's just three. ^__^
I don't recall FreeBSD (actually, PC-BSD is what I used) having an extensive repository system, so I figure they kinda need to cram in as much software into their discs as possible. Still, it's not bad,... they also offer install DVDs too (and net install discs too, not that you mention it). ^.^
And FreeSBIE for sure is on a single LiveCD. And it has a great OS-tan. ^___^

oooooh... so FreeBSD, and PC-BSD in that matter spanning 3 CD's is also like Debian spanning 20 CD's?
nah... I've been feeling daring lately. Want to try various Linux distro's (and BSD's too! ).
PC-BSD running KDE should look the same as Linux running KDE right?

C-quel In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-02-05 13:07:26 +0000 UTC]
nah, wouldn't go THAT far. But it's safe to say that Debian and FreeBSD are about the same now in turns of how they distribute their system. Can definitely vouch that it wasn't always like that, though.
If you're feeling daring,.. but still want to avoid wasting plastic (aka, CD-R, DVD-R)... try running FreeSBIE through Virtualbox and see how it looks.
I do recall that PC-BSD + KDE looked identical to any Linux system I used then,... with of course a different startup and devil icons instead of penguin ones. But this was at least 2 years ago, though.... ^^

and isn't that odd? KDE on a liveCD? no thanks XD. I like minimalistic distros... as my 2.0ghz single core CPU here is being slowed down by 256mb of RAM. Heck, Damn Small takes quite a while to load.

I'm a big PCLinuxOS user too, plus a fan of Mepis, Pardus, Knoppix, Mandriva, etc. So in terms of overall usage, KDE on LiveCDs is actually the norm for me. ^_____^'
But yeah, it can be top-heavy. Gnome too, but anything based on XFCE, Enlightenment or below certainly gives you way more bang for the buck. ^.^
Although how fast these things ultimately perform depend heavily on the following, in order of importance from top to bottom.... ^^
1) The amount of RAM
2) The speed of the CD/DVD drive, or USB solid state (if mounted on a USB flash drive)
3) Size of CPU cache
4) Speed of CPU itself ^.^
For the last one, I remember using KDE liveCDs on my EeePC 4G and they ran beautifully -- but on the 2G, which had comparable specs except for the cache (32KB instead of the 4G's 512KB) everything ran comparatively crappier. ^.^;
In any event, if it's speed and minimalism that's up alley, I think Slitaz will be quite the treat. ^^
[link]
Or if you want something non-Linux, here's this neat little thing (promising 2-second boots on 8MB of RAM).... ^____^'
[link]
And with a 4MB ISO file, I doubt very much it's gonna hog stuff or launch a rocket. Fufufufu.... ^o^

My Fluxbox debian boots up lightning fast compared to xubuntu...
on a side note, if I optimize the kernel, will it boot even faster?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
C-quel In reply to GenshiHebi [2009-02-09 03:44:08 +0000 UTC]
Depends on the optimizations done. If it's to tweak multimedia capabilities, you'll have a blazing fast media player with the same old boot time.
But for the most part, yeah I'm sure some kernel tweaking will help with boot times -- although there's a lot more that goes into it which thankfully many of the major distributions are taking a look at (which is why the latest Mandriva, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc, boot faster).
Losetheos is too oldish,... I wanted to recommend something hot off the press. I don't even remember if there's an OS-tan for that one, although Bella or Katt-chan brought it up once. ^.^

ever compiled your own? How long does it take? I've heard compiling takes 10 minutes ~ a few days. I just want to slim it down as I don't really need/want some of the generic kernel's features.
oh... loselthos XD I've seen comments on slashdot comparing it to how Linux started, quoting Linus' posts on usenet, commending on it's Public Domain-ness and bashing it's author for making yet another programming language.

but I didn't notice it when nvidia added a new kernel module the fourth or third time I installed the nvidia driver via the repo's.

I'm glad you took the precaution -- I figure that where there's a huge concentration of artist's, there's bound to be a proportionally-large number of plagiarists or just plain lazy people. The closest thing I'll ever offer to that are collages and semi-collages, and I make note of them when I do. ^^
If O-Chibi-sama likes my artwork, then the C-quel should seriously consider doing some Chibi/Takai fanart some day, maybe in March. It's not like I don't lack ideas,... but I haven't been openly involved in true giantess material for over a decade, so naturally I'm a tad shy. ^____^'

And I can understand the shyness... It took me quite a few years before I could really come out of my personal closet. I'm glad I did though. I really doubt I would have continued drawing if I hadn't.
And fanart from you would be like a gift from a king. o_o Your work is gorgeous... I'd just be worried I wouldn't be able to return the favor, every time I agree to do an art-trade with someone, I take forever on my half. XD

C-quel In reply to chibiBiscuit [2009-01-31 08:03:18 +0000 UTC]
Fufu... well technically-speaking i'm not an artist or at least don't consider myself at such (I'm a programmer, computer technician, educator and numismatist before I'm an artist). So I've never valued the [subjective] beauty of art nearly as much as its content.
And trust me, your work, apart from having its own charm and beauty, also has some of the most wonderful content I've seen within our particular community. ^^
It is amazing to me how much feeling of isolation I was able to dispel prior to discovering our community on the internet. This was about 10 years ago or so, and all it took was a simple, almost accidental search in the then-dominant Altavista to discover websites, messageboards, forums, stories, drawings, videos and just resources galore of content that I never in my wildest dreams thought would ever exist. Despite all that, though, it has been a long and hard process to break my ice so to speak.
But I have been opening up in recent years, and my preferences have permeated into some of my artwork, not just in the above but in other characters as well (might illustrate this in my next drawing). ^^
More than happy you were able to overcome that shyness -- otherwise, I would never had had the privilege of knowing the epic Takai/Chibi couple. ^.^
As for the fanart, I am getting a bit ahead of myself since there are still other projects I need to get out of the way. But for sure I think I have a concept that would definitely knock your socks off, and one that I'm more than happy to experiment with. ^///^
And don't worry about returning the favor -- in addition to drawing for fun, I also draw as advertisement for my flagship vector graphics program, Inkscape .
I can't contribute code yet, and there's only so much monetary donations can do,... but as long as I continue to draw my best in that excellent FOSS program, I think that serves as invaluable free advertisement for that project. ^__^
