Description Traveller Monthly Challenge: Favorite Chartacter. This was a real challenge for me because, I must admit, I don't really have a "favorite character". In the spirit of the challenge, however, I decided to submitt this piece. A Vegan naval intelligence officer named Ulan. Here he is communicating with a group of dolphins wearing travel suits (self-contained, grav-powered, super-humid environments).

Your painting is probably in Marc's garage.... right next to the velvet Cat Elvis.

It was actually one of the first ever cases someone else doing the color work for me. I did inks on Bristol board, and Steve Bryant at GDW did the color digitally-which was quite the novelty back then! So I suspect my original ink is still on the bed of some ancient scanner, in a garbage dump somewhere.

OM(F!)G! This is TOOOOOOO freakin' cool.
Both wicked AND pissah!

Not only is it awesome to see new Traveller art from you, but the subjects are just the kind of thing I'd love to see more of in a Traveller game. I probably told you the REAL story of the Vegans, back in the day, huh? About why we didn't see them after their initial, ubercool rollout? So it's great to see you break the long-withering taboo and put 'em front and center. And your dolphins!!! Two different species!!! And I love their suit designs! Is the cranial cover a psi shield, or is it just a psi receptor for controlling their suits?

Did you ever do a Hiver? Man, I'd love to see you do one.
No.... "twelve"!

This is easily the best Traveller image I've seen in a VERY long time. Hey, you should get in on the Traveller calendar next year. Maybe we could team up - you could draw, I could color?!

Wicked? *scratching head* Pissah? You crack me up, lil' buddy!

This is actually new OLD Traveller art from me. It appears on page 9 of MegaTraveller: Arrival Vengence (1992)...but it hasn't seen the light of day in decades!

The REAL Vegan story? Hmmm. Nnnnnoo...I don't recall such a story being told. Do regale!

Psi-shield? Psi-receptor? Why have just one...when you so easily have both?!

I have yet to do a Hiver, but I am planning to depict the species in a future Challenge.

Being part of a Traveller Calendar would be "ubercool". And an ubercool team-up would be great!

Ah... so a reprint. I guess I never saw it before. Still.... it's no less wicked or pissah!

The real story of the Vegans? Well.... years ago, when pterodactyls filled our skies, I asked Marc Miller why nothing had been done with the Vegans after their stellar debut in The Journal. He told me that they were sort of the pet race of Rich Banner - GDW's first art director and one of the founding partners. Shortly after the Vegan rollout, GDW had a "regime change" and Rich "left the company" (read that as you will). Once he was gone they were reluctant to use his creation. Reading between the lines, I'm not sure if he left with threats that they couldn't use any of his stuff or he'd take legal action? Maybe it was just a case of no one really cared about 'em but Rich. Anyway, they were kind of orphaned for a long time.... I think the "no Vegans" taboo is pretty dead now, though.

Yeah, let's do a Traveller calendar piece together for 2014!!! I am REALLY looking forward to your Hiver images. I just hope you don't buy into the whole "Hivers fly ships that are featureless boxes" thing that was later introduced by GURPS writers. I daresay that's not how they were originally conceived. I sure wish DGP had held together long enough to do our own Hiver alien book. I can only imagine what you and Blair would have done with it!?!

A great tale indeed! It is, however, also a SAD story. But it needn't stay that way. The Vegans should be rediscovered. The calendar-collaboration would be a good place to do that.

Blair Reynolds. Yeah...he has some cooool stuff in the Traveller line. I've been marvelling as I flip through the old products. A Hiver alien book would've been an awesome project!

Well... for now just start thinking HIVERS!
Do you have enough reference on them? BTW, this is the source you want to use:

Thanks, Eric! I've been into depicting some of the more neglected Traveller races recently. Guess I'll continue to do so!
