Description
Traveller Monthly Challenge: Favorite Chartacter. This was a real challenge for me because, I must admit, I don't really have a "favorite character". In the spirit of the challenge, however, I decided to submitt this piece. A Vegan naval intelligence officer named Ulan. Here he is communicating with a group of dolphins wearing travel suits (self-contained, grav-powered, super-humid environments).Related content

Yes indeed, Jeff. This is one o' mine. I'm glad you appreciate the effort I made to be true to the look of the dolphins.

Very cool, nice simple yet effective background too!

If I remember correctly this scene was set in a space port of some kind...so I felt comfortable with a simple wall-graphic type of background. It works for this image.

This piece alone is so much worth a watch!!!
Somehow, it reminds me a bit of work done by Moebius.
What I really like about this character is that although he looks
really strange, I get this strong impression of a friendly fellow
who's just having a chat with some friends. Very nice work!

Moebius? Wow...THAT is quite a compliment! I am genuinely fond of my Traveller days.Β This was a great piece to work on. Glad you like it!

Do I see zipatone used in this illustration? (Rubs his eyes) Cool.

It is indeed Zipatone. The big eyeball doesn't miss a trick, Blaine. Yeah...Zip was all the rage back in the stoneage. A little berry juice mixed with spit...a stick from the fire...a cave wall...and Zipatone!

Ha! you made me laugh just then. Sorry, I'm not hip enough to just type lol.
And to think, people used to illustrate whole comic books that way!
I have some Zipatone around here somewhere, been waiting for the right project to use it on. It's probably rotten by now. I'm not quite a dinosaur in the digital age but just about. Maybe more like a sabertooth cat in the digital age. Sigh... O.K. a prehistoric tree sloth in the digital age.

I have got to start posting up some of my Traveller stuff. Running a campaign currently and the art for it has been pretty good so far (thanks largely to my friends adding to my meager skills).

This incredible image alone would probably cost $12 million in terms of a movie's budget. Maybe a bit less if it gets saturated with a JJ Abrahms lens flare.
I have to echo NICELabs here - I never got to run games in the Solomani Rim, but the Vegans were a species I always wanted to use in a session. And the dolphins, well, enough said. Their travel suits are definitely the Bugatti Veyron of life-support systems!

I seem to be running on a theme, Chris. Depicting some of the alien species that haven't gotten the spotlight. When I came across this image in my art stash...I just had to share it with the Traveller devotees here on DA.

I'm very glad you did. I like the Aslan and the Vargr, don't get me wrong... but Traveller isn't always about just 1 or 2 alien races (not counting the various subsets of Humaniti).
The dolphins in the Traveller Journal (I still have the original article from a long time ago) first introduced me to the idea of 'uplifted' species. Having a chatty pair of dolphins babbling away at a Vegan so fast their translator units keep having to reboot would make for a wonderful movie scene -- not that it will ever happen. There wouldn't be enough explosions, gun battles, or crashlanding starships involved.
Never mind. We've got your image and that's more than enough for me!

Fantastic!! None of our campaigns ever played in the Solomani Rim so we never met the Vegans... or dolphins but I so totally loved the notion that humans weren't the only intelligent species on Earth to make it to the stars Absolutely wonderful scene

That one was and still is so very Traveller(esque) that I just chime in with Drell-7 supporting Arcas words.
Arrival Vengeance was one of the last publications I purchased before our last really active group split up. Those were good times.
Great to see that image here.
