I don't know why, but I'm imagining Corelle convincing Quen to quit smoking.

Of everyone here who does, he'd probably be the one to cave first and go buy the patch.

Quen isn't smoking regular cigarettes - there's no tobacco in them. They haven't been explained yet but let's just say it's good that he has them.

I'm imagining Corelle convincing Vik to stop smoking, now.
Because of what's happened...

Not going to happen.

Again, a great job done on a complex dynamic.

Thank you!
I guess the daily discussions Vik and I have over the story and characters are paying off, huh?

Indeed.  In droves!

I think the writing and timing turned out perfectly in this.

I really feel kinda bad for Quen. I'm assuming that pretty much everything Carmella said is true, she just said really hurtfully and blunt. Which is not the way to treat your friend, at all.

Also I like the last panels "WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS?!" X)

Thank you!

I think an important thing to keep in mind is that these people aren't friends - they're closer to soldiers in terms or relationships and mentalities.

Ah okay, that makes more sense. But still, it was obviously uncalled for.

Quen wouldn't blow up over something like that. He has way better control than some Scarface motherfucker.

I was expecting an implied "she wasn't going to see new years" sort of thing.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Mercurz [2016-02-15 10:59:47 +0000 UTC]

This isn't that kind of story.

See, when a story about "heroic" characters has them fighting, it's either played for shits and giggles OR they actually attack one another. All this shows is that the team isn't united in any cause and are just a bunch of unstable children. X-Men and any number of anime are like this.

They have fragile egos and go through huge convoluted character arcs of crying and whining in self pity. Tell them the truth about their situation and they break. It's people who get pissed off at the truth who are disgustingly in denial. That's why the heroes in stories are usually plucky rebel terrorists.

THIS story is about, well, the bad guys. They argue, but they argue about serious issues and not "YOU LIKE HIM MORE THAN MEEEEE" bullshit.

Carmella is 100% right (except for the part about Quen having a big ego) and everything she says needs to be addressed. A true villainous leader like Quen doesn't get angry at someone telling the truth - he gets angry when someone is acting in direct threat to his people.

She is giving him a different perspective on his actions he hadn't seen before, and while it is indeed painful, it's smartest to be humble and adjust, becoming stronger and more aware of the problems, than to kill the messenger and thus leaving those problems fester. That's why the villains in stories are often a large establishment.

And that's my thesis on why Captain Jean Luc Picard is the best villainous leader ever.

A lesson in assertiveness.
Good job on pacing and, hmm... sampling the dialogue? The way it's distributed. The "boring" panels also work well here.

I am more and more impressed by Quen, dealing with rather difficult situations. He surly earns his respect. And now I wonder, is there anything, that would trigger him? And if so... what will happen then?

Great work as always. <3

There are ways of making him snap, but it's difficult since he just isn't an angry person.

Thank you!

We thought it would be a good idea to have some distance at this moment, like the audience wants to be far away in case of an explosion but also wants to see what will happen.

Professor-Meowiarty [2016-02-14 01:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Quen's earned my respect here. That fact he's going to walk away (possibly to vent or do something where no one can see him, I've been in that mode before) instead of blow up at someone takes a lot of control. Even if she was out of line, a man has to stand by what he believes and how they feel people are treated. It's better to talk better about it when tempers aren't at full and emotions aren't as potently raw.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Professor-Meowiarty [2016-02-14 12:24:13 +0000 UTC]

That's why he's been such a successful leader.
We'll get to see more of this in the next chapters, and also get some backstory on how he learned how to be this controlled. Looking forward to your reactions.

We wanted to show the difference between self-control and the lack thereof, and why Quen is a good leader and Carmella isn't.

He's a good boss who employs difficult people because the skills he needs come with difficult personalities.

Imagine being a surgeon and having a problem employing people who need to be told what to do all the time. Bad idea, right?

Quen needs tough, critical people who point out things that could get everyone screwed.
