Description
The Discovery Class Deep Space Explorer is another of my Crossover designs (thanks to MasterOfPointillism for getting the idea stuck in my head).Trekifiying the USS Discovery from "2001: A Space Odyssey" and it's sequal.
Don't go quoting warp physics, please. It's just a crossover.
And as this is my second (third if you count the Jarillion) off-milestone crossover. I guess I might as well give up waiting for them to happen. And post them as they get drawn.

Just one nit...I kept meaning to say, but kept forgetting...
The lower panel, of each cargo pod, is about the same size, as the upper. The reason, it seems shorter, is because the bottom of each pod, tapers in, a bit.

This is what our first Deep space Explorer would be looking like when we develop the Warp drive

Well, the original "2001: A Space Odyssey" version, was based on futurized NASA tech. So, it really would look like that.

This ship just might actually be suitable for warp, unlike the wide bodied saucers the Federation usually employs. Good Job.

A very nice mix of 2001 and Star Trek. Do you take requests? Because I would ask for a TNG or 26th century version of this!

Thanks. Depends on the request. But nothing 24th century or later. Sorry.

Cool. Was this intended not to be a frontline vessel? Because it doesn't look like it has phasers or anything. But you added a deflector dish, which was nice.

As it's a cross-over ship...It's more just for show. But like with the Discovery from "2001", deep space exploration and planetary study. Purely a research ship.

Yeah, plus, if you're gonna keep HAL while still doing the whole "secret mission" thing, best not to give him phasers, right?

No windows and people go crazy from claustrophobia.
Add windows and people go crazy staring out into the void.
Can't win for losing.

imachrismoose [2008-11-18 19:26:38 +0000 UTC]
Why are there so few windows if it is an exploration ship?
π: 0 β©: 1
captshade In reply to imachrismoose [2008-11-18 19:40:30 +0000 UTC]
Because the midsection of the ship is supply stowage, and sensor equipment. The front section is the primary habitation area. There are two major obsevation areas, the center "ring" houses the crew quarters, and the rest is taken up by labs and shuttle / hanger space.

imachrismoose In reply to captshade [2008-11-18 21:34:18 +0000 UTC]
Just because it is mostly labs doesn't mean there can't be windows...

AnataraKentara In reply to imachrismoose [2012-11-06 06:45:55 +0000 UTC]
Cameras and telescopes replace windows.
Especially considering windows are 1) structural weaknesses and 2) Radiation-welcomers.
Military Subs don't have windows, and they get along just fine.

SciFiRocker [2008-10-20 10:15:40 +0000 UTC]
I think for a 'Deep Space Explorer' this ship has not enough windows.
It looks like a freighter or a fueltanker.
But the design of this crossover is great.
What's with the USS Alexej Leonov? *g*
