All Rights Reserved.'The Rock' is a large outcrop of mainly quartzite that rises 360m above the Riverina plains of southern NSW, Australia. It was originally called 'Hanging Rock' after the large boulder which overhang the eastern face (left), but when this boulder, well, stopped hanging in 1874, the name of it (and the town that resides next to it) was changed to simply 'The Rock'.
I have had this shot planned for quite a while but I had to wait until I had the right moon phase, weather and time of year. Shot at about 2am this morning with a last quarter moon just rising on the horizon behind me. 14 shot panorama.

Nice shot as usual, Greg! I'm amazed at the horizontal positioning of the Milky Way down there; here, as shown by some of my own recent pics, the summer Milky Way is vertical, rising straight out of the eastern horizon, streaming overhead, and falling into the west with Sagittarius.

Thank you very much Brett Yeah we are pretty lucky down here. The central bulge starts to emerge on the eastern horizon at the end of January and sets in the south west flat like this around about November.

Australia is a beautiful place, but I never remember the sky looking like that! Absolutely stunning! I would LOVE to know how you captured those stars!

Outstanding as always. It's a good thing that you are a "night" person. I can never stay awake that long except when jet-lagged! This works really well with the horizontal Milky Way and the balance between the "bulb" of the rock and the burst of the white light on either side of the center of the photo.

Hey Greg, I'm heading up north this weekend in an attempt to get some star/milky way photos. Just wondering what ISO and the shutter speed you use for taking a single shot?
I'm trying to gather a ton of information and be as prepared as possible before I set off! haha

There are no words to describe the love that I have for this photograph. A well planned and executed panoramic photograph with all the things I love to see. It's interesting to have this "angle" of the Milky Way as well since I am so used to seeing it upright or diagonal. You sure know how to put a smile on my face with your photography.

I'm very glad you like it Yeah I am lucky enough here in the Southern Hemisphere to get various angles on the Milky Way. It sets like this in the west virtually horizontal.

VERY nice Greg. 2 rows of 7 vertical shots? Looks excellent, all the hanging about til the early hours of the freezing morning paid off!
