Description
Edit: Basically redid the entire animation, added two frames (so that's 12 frames now) and none of the previous frames was left untouched. Tried to smoothen the motion and make it a bit more deer-like, also made the neck more dynamic. Obviously the tail is still missing, but I've spent too much time on this already so I'm just leaving it out.The old version is here (for comparison): [link]

Animation assignment for school. Not much to say about this, I know it's not the best but ah well. I'm not feeling very well and I wanted this out of the way, critique won't be necessary as I know what's been done wrong (movement, lack of tail, edginess), but I'm not going to fix it at the moment.
It's still been good practise. There are 10 frames. Should've been 12, but I timed them wrong and couldn't manage to fit another one in. I might still do that later.

I know that feeling. xD I have to do a basic walk cycle for class and I'm so bored with it that I got lazy with the hair (using 4 frames instead of his recommended minimum of 8...I think he won't notice. >.>)

Deer can run, but their movement is a bit more springy/bouncy than I made it.

I think it looks nice, the edges seem to give it a sleek look. I probably wouldn't have even noticed that it didn't have a tail if you hadn't have mentioned it. o.o

This is wonderful! It definitely looks like a deer running! (As a side note, I was listening to Ramstein's Sonne when looking at this and they somehow...go.)

This is a great attempt, even if you may not feel fully satisfied with it! It's really nice how you kept the volume of the deer consistent, that's a problem I always have when animating. And the smooth, clean lines are lovely. Don't be too hard on yourself, you know what mistakes there are and you definitely can improve lots!

Thanks a lot . I can definitely improve this but I don't know if I will; our next assignment is to animate a two-second loop so I'll probably focus on getting that down instead!

This is really neat :3 did you use flash?
Animation is so much fun, just wish it didn't involve so much time

Nope I used Photoshop CS2 and ImageReady . It's definitely fun to animate, but it sucks if you've worked through all the frames and then realize that it's not working so you have to go over all of the frames again to fix it XD. It's indeed very time consuming.

Oh my golly, haha ImageReady can be a bit of a pain in that scene
I've tried it out a few times, but its just too complicated for me.
Either way your animations come out quite well!!

Very nice for this size with 10 frames! Seems a bit odd without a tail but that's possibly because I'm used to deer flagging their scuts as they run off (Is that defensive or teasing?)... Or a different deer type...
Given that we get both legs it's a bit odd we only see one ear. But yeah! Nice!

Thank you! I'm not sure what they try to communicate, although I assume it's either a defense mechanism or simply a result of their movement.

looks good. my only real issue is to give it more of an impact on the down position and maybe push the up a little more, stronger sense of weight...make it more springy...more like a deer and less like a horse. what did you do this with?

I'm aware of the flaws in it's movement, I made it too heavy.
I made this in Photoshop CS2, saved the animation in ImageReady.

Animation isn't very hard, it just takes a couple of failed attempts until you get into the right groove and start figuring it out .

Yeah i just need to start out with the basics first before even attepting what i want to do. I've always wanted to draw my fursona and other characters in anthro form with instruments making random animation music videos.

It looks very nice. I, personally, still haven't figured out walk/run cycles. >> It seems like a lot of people do them (some, like this one, are more successful than others) but they seem so difficult. :/

CaraidArt In reply to Meg-James [2011-02-10 22:15:14 +0000 UTC]
Run cycles aren't very hard if you know how and where to look . There's quite a few slow-motion videos to be found on YouTube of various animals that are really useful. It's timing the pace of the run that's the most difficult to do. Ideally, one should use 24 frames per second because that's the rate our eyes can see fluidly, but that was a little too much work xD.
Thank you!

It looks like a good smooth run cycle. Perhaps not in the style that a deer runs though.

CaraidArt In reply to LilOrangeDragoness [2011-02-10 19:37:09 +0000 UTC]
I know, deer have a more exaggerated run cycle, that is, slightly more "springy". I just couldn't motivate myself to fix it anymore.
Thanks though .

I've never tried to animate a deer cycle. I'd imagine they would be one of the toughest to get just right because of their bounciness. Regardless though, your animation is stunning
