Description First: Yes, I know, Mr. Inverted is not a wizard...but he (the character) demanded to be included, and he's so easy to draw, I just couldn't say no.

Apparently I have a thing for wizard characters. Always have. It's the magic, and the cloaks, and the pointy hats, I guess. Since Mr. I isn't technically a wizard, though, they'll just have to form a different kind of club. Like a Hat Club.

Mr. I and Dorian are posing agreeably. Cyril, however, as usual, appears to have only one thing on his mind. Dorian had better get out of the way quickly, as I'm sure nothing good is about to happen over in Cyril's corner...

You guys rock!

Boring Technical Stuff Nobody Cares About:

Inked by hand and scanned, and then I spent an hour messing with the darn levels and it STILL looked crappy. I don't know how to level properly on Paint Shop Pro 8 or Photoshop 5. Which are the only programs I have. If anyone does know, I'd be eternally grateful to learn how...for the lines are still too thick, and they make me cry.
Fudged Dorian's colors I'm sure, since ~Golden-Silver has a very soft shading method that doesn't really translate well to cel-ish-shading.
I'm unreasonably proud of how I managed to lift the IF logo.
Fullbodies! This was partially an effort of mine to work on anatomy. That means--I drew them NAKIE first. O.O And made Cyril doing an unnecessarily complex thing with a bottle, for the masochistic heck of it. (Darn your hand, Cyril!!)

Freakin' awesome! Cyril and 2 of the characters I most want to fight (Mr I has come back from the dead...it could happen). I like how you did Cyril's robe/coat tail

I'm glad you like it! I really hope you get to fight ~Golden-Silver too, after this round. I'm looking forward to a battle of the wizards. *crosses fingers*

Personally, I think Mr. I was just too much of a player to die. xD

Me too; of course that means you both have to make it to Round Five...and I'm terrified that it'll end up that one of you faces Zeurel in the fourth round or something; I guess we'll see!

Thank you so much, he looks wonderful! You especially do clothing folds a lot better than I do, and I just altogether love it. x3 Fav'd!

My only regret is that I didn't find this sooner!

Thank you! Another reason to love wizards' cloaks...

Sorry about not telling you. I just feel rather awkward "promoting" my work, I guess. Though I suppose it probably would've been okay in this instance...but you beat Cyril to it!

WOAAAAAH! I love wizards too! I just bought a manga thing yesterday and it had to do with wizards and witches because I'm attracted to MAGIC!

The hat club! Does that mean Climber is eligible!

It surprised me when I realized that I actually knew these characters! I knew Dorian from Mr. Inverted's flash/comics and I just knew Cyril!

I just love Mr. Inverted! Especially how you drew them!

Magic: It is an essential part of my imagination, yes, yes. Not the New Age witch stuff--just the standard fireball "incantation point-and-shoot" method. I wanna do that.

Climber is a fixture in the Hat Club. Obviously!

Ah~ The standard fireball method. Good times~ I would like to do that, except with water! I luuuuurve water! (And it's almost found everywhere!)

Oh! Oh! That means Chimbley can join too!

o3o

I would like to add a comment! My OC Valien is sorta like a wizard... Just missing the pointy hat and cloak, etc.

Pyron is a wizard! or was it a mage... Hmph....

Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to Klast [2008-03-28 05:23:54 +0000 UTC]

*laughs*

I was wondering if any other wizard characters were going to turn up that I'd missed. Alright, I can take a hint! Check my gallery for Valien and Pyron. (I won't add them to this pic; I had an idea for them that kinda required that they stand alone; putting them here would mess up the picture dynamics...sorry 'bout that. Hope you don't mind.)

Who doesn't love pointy hats?
XD

Technical things I do for line art:

Have a really high resolution copy of the sketch and then zoom in to 200%~300% depending on the size of the sketch. Then I use the normal brush command and draw the lines. I use a brush size 10, since I'm using a tablet and it lets me go from 0 to 10, hence giving the lines the thickness I desire. Is a pain to go through with it, because the zoom is too big sometimes you get lost, so is good to zoom out every now and then to see where you are at. This process tends to take a while, but it's worth it in the end ^__^

As for shading, this is what I do: I make a new layer on top of the colors and set it to multiply. Then I choose some blueish color... it can be gray, or yellow, depending on the setting. Then I just draw the shadow and the original colors get darker accordingly (saves you lots of time for choosing a darker color). You can repeat this step for even more darker shades. To end it off, I apply a gaussian blur to the shade of about 3... you can go higher, but not more than 10 since then the shadow seems to fade too much (this also depends on the size of the drawing though).

Also, another thing I do that makes the lines more soft is this. Once I finish the lineart on one layer I copy it and also apply the gaussian blur to it, then I just merge it with the original lineart.

Well, young padawan... those are all my current techniques. I hope they help you as you strive for success in the art community ^__^

Ah on a side note: You might want to add a small curvature line in the middle of the hand of the middle mage so that it doesn't look too flat.

No one!

I like to lineart with the tablet too. It makes everything so nice. (It tends to work better with my Photoshop than my Paint Shop Pro though, for reasons as yet unknown to me.) However, I just got a whole bunch of really nice ink pens, which I want to be able to use, gosh darn it! Hence my desire to learn the proper techniques of leveling with my ancient programs. -.-

At least this is still better than what I used to do--I used to just scan my inked work and use threshold. No resolution changes, even. Needless to say the lineart was all jagged and awful. I'm glad I'm out of those days...

Multiply is indeed awesome. It even lets me flood-fill my flats! O timesaver! I do a similar thing with shading, only instead of making a new layer and coloring blue over everything, I (for this piece at least) copied the flats and set that to Multiply, then erased what I didn't want in shadow. It keeps the colors nicely, with rare exceptions. I'll have to experiment with the blurring.

And you're right about that hand, I think. Oddly enough, I had the line for the thumb and even the head and heart lines drawn in there originally. Must've gotten lost in translation. Ah well, it's late...I'll add those later...

Many thanks for your very thorough comment!
