Description
This is a tender little moment between Summer the echidna and her red squirrel beau, Sterling (my boyfriend’s character). Their relationship is sorta old-fashioned, sorta weird, and deeply rooted in friendship. This was originally intended as a Valentine’s Day picture, but now it’s more of a summertime-themed picture.
It was my first serious try at drawing Sterling, my second serious try at drawing Summer’s new design, and my first serious try at drawing the two together. I also experimented with some texturing effects on their fur and hair. Hollyann’s noise fur tutorial was helpful on Sterling.

The background really wasn’t planned out, and I just threw it together (if you can’t tell). Originally there were supposed to be mountain silhouettes in the background with yellow lights from distant houses. It didn’t look right, so the mountains morphed into tall grass and the lights morphed into lightning bugs (which don’t actually live in our home state as far as I know).

Love Summer. Absolutely LOVE the sweet echidna gal with all those sexy dreadquills <3 <3 <3
I like how Sterling's hand is lovingly on Summer's. That's just so sweet and a certainty for all couples who adore their partners.
I must draw your two personages together sometime. You look oh-so-sweet and I like a challenge at trying things with coupled characters X3

Thanks! Me having affection for Summer is kind of like a grandmother having affection for her grandkids and showing them off with wallet photos. So it’s always great to hear that someone besides me finds her (or my other characters) appealing.
I’m not often interested in romance/couple pics, but this one is personal and kind of begged to be drawn. The ones I DO like show genuine affection coupled with innocence, which is what I was trying to get across here. Hopefully it’s not TOO sugary.
Sterling would look great in your style. He loved the Summer sketch you did.

I'm glad your drawing Summer again. After all your old scraps I wondered if you would ever get back to her.
I have to say, though--that technique is really not the greatest for fur. I've seen it well used for wood, and even a man's stubble, but it seems a little overused. The coloring on Sterling's tail rocks, though, and I love the glow the little heart emits.

Summer is my most personal character, the one who is “me” more than any of the others. I’m going through changes and transitions, so she is, too. But she’s not going away anytime soon.
I’m always wishing for a quick-and-dirty way to depict things like texture, so I wanted to experiment with that noise fur technique. One problem with it is the fur comes out looking really short, even if it’s not supposed to. The “long fur” type of coloring on Sterling’s tail is just me messing around, painting light and dark streaks with and smudging them, but it seems to come out more convincingly.

I love the fur on the squirrel's face and the denium texture added to thier jeans. One thing I may suggest is to put some grass strands in where they come in contact with the ground to reduce the illusion of "floating." In all, a definate fave!

Thank you. That’s one vote in favor of the squirrel’s fur texture, and one against. I agree that I should have put grass stalks overlapping their legs. I think I overlooked it because originally there wasn’t supposed to be any grass. >_<
