Description I started this a while back for the Children's Illustrator Group

It's may take on Captain Hook and Peter Pan that I laid out fully in a huge sketchbook in university. This book was so epic in size I had clasp straps stitched to it just to be able to keep it closed.

These same character designs can be seen in these earlier images too >>> [link] <<<>>> [link] <<< I called the moon the 'croon moon' because at night he sings small children to sleep. Later on I developed him to look like Elvis.

I'm going to use this as a pretty big portfolio piece now to get into more classic illustration. It was done, as with all of my work, in pencil and then inked with fountain pens and ink/PITT pens on Bristol board with some Photoshop rubbed up it.

I may consider selling prints of this to donate the money to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital >>> [link] <<<. Or I may try and market it in another more constructive way to get capital together for them.

This has really got me thinking I want to do an illustration from Peter Pan In Scarlet, next.

Thank you very much. I've a few more on this page somewhere too. With Hook and Smee.

Cheers. They're characters that I've loved and lived with for years so I have my own little ideas for them.

Hee, me too. I bet a lot of people can say the same thing. ^.^ Which is why there's so many stories about them.

Oh, as far as I'm concerned there's only one story about them and that's Barrie's. Although I'll give Peter Pan in Scarlet a free pass for being ace.

Yes, I've been thinking about reading that one. It looks like it would be very in tune with the original. And the old Peter Pan and the Pirates is the best cartoon variation I've ever seen. I highly recommend it. ^.^

Wasn't keen on that. I'm very picky about Captain Hook.

Y'know, I really love what you've done with the costumes here - not just the way each of them looks (though that's fantastic), but also the contrast between them. Hook's attire is BRILLIANT, and it suits him - every layer is so richly detailed, so dark and complex, and you can tell how heavy it is from the way it shifts as he moves. Pan's outfit, on the other hand, is feather-light, and it has its own details, but compared to Hook's it looks almost like a child's Halloween costume, painted in bright colors with simple, confident strokes. You've pretty much concentrated the personality of each character in a single outfit - in fact, have you ever done stage costuming? You'd be awesome at it!

Also, I love Peter's expression, it's so devil-may-care, he'd fit right in with Calvin (and Hobbes) and Bart Simpson. And the moon is just adorable. SELL THIS.

Hi Erika.

Thanks for paying so much attention. You really noticed everything that I aimed for. I put a lot of thought into this stuff and it's nice to see someone take it in.

I've never gone into stage costuming, but I have had costume & character design work for animation and the games industry. I was head hunted by EA games several years ago due to the original versions of these design. Not my bag, though. I'm an illustrator at heart and enjoy it too much as a 9-5 day job.

Thank you very much for all of your nice comments.

This is really cute but I think you should consider moving some of the figures so the composition is more interesting. Right now, there is no reason for my eyes to go anywhere except straight down and the nice colors and rendering of the figures are lost because the eye is bored. Also, you may not want to have the space between the characters all equal because it, once again, severs the path that the eye travels.

CarlPearce In reply to lizziebydesign [2010-10-15 09:59:30 +0000 UTC]

That's the way I do my compositions. I like them to be interesting and different. I don't feel the eye get's bored though. When I look at it I feel the opposite.

When you look at a standard comp with everything rammed in it's like looking at a pool of muddy water. Here I use a contrivance composition where you eye bounces from one to the other like a simplified Heath Robinson machine. Consequence and reaction.

The first thing you look at on the screen / page is the darkest largest shape; Hook. He is your starting point and my main focus because the image and this part of the story are HIS perspective. Your eye either follows the curve of his arm and the trail of light from Tink up and round to the gun, or alternately straight from the gun up to Peter who is hiding above Hook and 'hiding' perspectively.

I'm literally telling the story with the composition.

The moon is almost unimportant set dressing, other than to tell us something slightly about the Neverland being a fantasy. The detail on their clothing is there for repeat viewings only.

That would be really cool, I'd buy it. I noticed that your whole gallery has a very animated look to it, like they're screenshots from cartoons rather than just pictures. That'd be really cool if you got to illustrate for Peter Pan, good luck!

It's because I really REALLY love films. My whole style has grown from British Victorian illustration, comic books and cinema. Specifically films like Jurassic Park and Falling Down.

My main Victorian influences are Charles Robinson, William Heath Robinson (they were brothers), John Tenniel and Aubrey Beardsley.
