Maybe one day when I'm crazy enough, I'll make a tutorial on the left half of that picture.

Copic Tutorial II: [link]

HOLY FREAK THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG. I thought I'd take a nice, relaxing break from my chaotic Anime Expo preparations and have a go at my first tutorial, but nooooooo...this thing is more stressful than an actual drawing.

But seeing that I'm a PS newbie, I'm pretty glad that I was able to at least compile all this together. I guess I picked up some bits of Photoshop knowledge over the year after all. Would be sad if I didn't.

People have been asking me to do a tutorial for a long time now, and I apologize for taking next to forever to get around to it The thought of making a tutorial always intimidated me since I have like 234012938 WIP pictures to choose from. But I finally got it done

Compressing 15 painful hours of sweat, cursing, and flinging objects into a 670×7637 pixel tutorial is no easy task. I'm kind of sad that I had to cut like 30 pictures (about 8 steps) off from the walk through. The thing is flippin' ginormous as it is, so I couldn't make it even larger D: And excuse my random doodles. I went a little nuts on the commentary too -_-;;

This is a thank-you gift for all of my watchers and friends online, and hopefully it'll be of some use to those of you who are starting out with markers :>

FAQ's
"Where do you get those markers? How much are they?!"
You can get Copics at local art stores (if you're lucky), and definitely online. Aside from a Japanese bookstore I go to, Kinokuniya, I also order them from online at [link] . THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. They can cost from $4.50 to $6.50 each, so shop smart :>

"What paper do you use?"
Manga manuscript, A4 size; I prefer Copic and Manga University brand. You can find these online too.

"How did you learn to draw like this?"
Lots of trial and error and lots of practice.

EDIT:
Um...holy crap. Another DD?! I never even dreamed of getting the first one. Thank you =AdigunPolack for your suggestion and kind words, and ^znow-white for featuring it! I appreciate it very much!

This is very useful. The problem is, I only have one copic. In my country, one copic = at least $50 That means if I buy 72B set like yours, it probably cost me $2000. I'm not kidding

OH THANK YOU! I actually started using Copic marks for my manga a few days ago. I only have six colored ones and six ones for Black through light Grey. ANyway, I think it came out pretty good for a first try, although all I had was orange so the skin looks like they have a disease since it's so dark. ANyway, how much does a set of copic marks like yours cost?

Where can I buy the 003 copic linear pen, because seeing how it turns out it makes me want to buy one, oh and the white ink Im tired of using acrylic paint for highlights or using as a pupil. Very nice tutorial, best one I've seen.

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!!!!! I was so happy to know that I'm not the only one who has to sketch things out a million times, and can erase to had and wrinkle the paper. @_@ This has given me some great tips!! Now I just need to expand my marker collection, and find a place t store it. But I have one question. I have trouble with markers, especially Copics, tending to have unneven color. By which I mean that when I have large areas to color, one section will dry then when I get back to color the section next to it there will be a line where the two meet, if you understand what I'm saying. :S Is there a way to avoid/eliminate this? I've seen so many amazing works color with copic markers that don't have that.

SugarKaiques [2011-03-06 01:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Just out of curiosity, when you color do you use the "fine" tip or the "broad" tip? =o

Absolutely amazing and so informative ! I have such a hard time coloring (Well, that may also be due to the fact that my patience is non-existent, ;A; ) and this has really inspired and informed me.

One question though: In the inking section, I noticed that the first paper with the sketch was dark and smudged from erasing and what-not, but the next image (the inked one) was perfectly clean. Did you switch to a new piece of paper for the inking? If so, how did you go about inking it? Tracing the original, or...?

Thank god for this tutorial. I hate hate hate digital art tools and drawing on a tablet. I rather work 3 hours with markers than 1 hour on a digital art program. But I didn't know how to get that fine 3 dimensional look you have in your drawings until now. Thanks for taking time out for us novices.
