“Mommy?” The little grey kitten looked up at her mother.

“Yes?” The queen replied. Like many of the females living in the clan, she was the mother of multiple litters; her fourth would probably come in another couple of months once her current kits were weaned off her milk.
“Redwind is Wolfstar’s brother isn’t he?” The kitten mewed, crawling over to her mother’s paws to curl up in them for an afternoon nap.
Her youngest daughter had been watching Redwind conversing with his brother, Wolfstar. Both had recently taken up new roles, with Wolfstar becoming the leader after his father's death and Redwind, to the shock of the Clan, becoming a medicine cat apprentice.

“That’s right, my darling,” she swept her tongue over the top of the tiny cat’s head. “They’re as close as two brothers can be.”

“Then how come Redwind has to be a medicine cat?” The kitten wrinkled her nose, her voice dancing up in her confusion. “How come he didn’t become a warrior? Or Wolfstar’s deputy?”

Her mother looked at her with tired eyes. “Redwind wasn’t forced to be a medicine cat; he chose to follow that path.”

The kitten scrunched up her face again. “Why?” she mewled, persisting as her confusion only grew. “Aren’t the medicine cats considered to be the low-ranks?”

The queen frowned. Low-ranks. Not an official term, but it was a well-known derogatory slang for cats like her, her mate and her family, meaning exactly what it sounded like. “Not exactly, my dear. Medicine cats are not considered as high rank as the senior warriors, but they are similar in rank to the weaker warriors and apprentices. I had guessed Redwind would rather spend his time healing than fighting or patrolling. He was always an advocate against violence.” There was a pause and she spoke again, mostly to herself. “Or perhaps he has his own reasons; ones no one knows but himself.”

Thought I'd talk a little bit about how this Clan works. Unlike the canon Warriors universe, cats are divided into unofficial "ranks". They aren't exactly "sorted" into these ranks and it isn't really an outspoken rule that members of the Clan have to be categorized: it just sort of happens, whether you are born into it or just you happen to be a "weaker" individual.

Medicine cats are considered middle-rank because of the feeble connotations that come with the task: no fighting is learned, they don't really hunt or patrol. They mostly collect herbs for a Clan that "rarely" gets sick. But the system still recognizes them as important in the event that they are needed.
