I was looking through my scraps and saw this very old portrait I did back in 2002. It made me smile, and laugh, because A) it's funny to see how I started and B) it looks so terribly bad. I remember, when I finished my first portrait, I was so proud of myself!I had this crazy idea of getting all my best portraits of each year and put them next to each other.
Hmm, I think I improved my skills just a little, don't you think?...
I had several periods
2002 - the 'I like to draw stuff from magazines' period
2003 - the 'Lord of the Rings rox my sox' period
2004 - the 'Johnny Depp is so cool' period
2005 - the 'random actors and actresses' period
2006 - the 'I think I really do like Final Fantasy' period
2007 - the 'and House kicks ass as well' period
So people, stop saying you won't become as good as I am these days. When I started, my stuff looked really bad, too!

I for one totally suc at "realistic" drawings in portraits and such, but this little thing kinda does make u feel 1) improvements can be achieved b) damnit he's my age and draws like this I SUC

whoa, I don't know if this gives me hope or depress me badly rofl, I'm 23 and I've been trying to draw something since I was 9.
To be honest I haven't tryed everytday in those 14 years and I'm ddicated to science, but woha, your improvement sure is impressive.

Funny. I thought about making some time line of my work some time ago, and then I finally look through your gallery a bit more and find this. I just had to show your time line (the one that goes to 2008) to a few others because of the "I suck, I suck, I suck, I suck" thing. This is a good motivation to give...
Although, I was never really impressed with myself so much when I was in the younger teenage like you felt I suppose. I have had a point of being impressed to having tears of joy on my deviation "Davey Havok V" in later 2006 because it looked more touchable than anything else that I had and it was my first one that looked more touchable(even if it was proportioned horribly), and then almost a year later I hated it even more and it became tears of sorrow (and most of my conniption fit and tears was trying to draw my little brother and people in glasses). Damn, I talk too much.

I'm 14 now, and my best drawing so far looks somewhere along the lines of your 2005 one... Hmmm. Anyway, I'm hoping to get to your level of expertise before I graduate highschool! That's my goal!

wow that gives me alot of relief cause i thot that i wasnt very good at portraits. Right now im 14 1/2, the age u started. And so i thot that i sucked when i looked at ur amazing work. This is really cool for me so I can see how i might end up as an artist. very cool.

you're such an inspiration to me. Every time I look at your gallery, I'm just in shock by how amazing everything is. It gets me a little down, because I can't help but believe that I'll never be this good, and it's something that I would absolutely love to be able to do. To be able to reproduce something like this, to think of a scene and put it down perfectly on the paper. I know you use references, but still it's amazing.
I keep working. I practice a lot. But I get bummed out about it sometimes. Seeing something like this makes me feel like, if I just keep working at it, maybe someday I can be even half as good as you are. I would settle for half as good.
Your gallery is awesome. Every time I look at it, I could spend hours just going through every picture. Thanks for doing such amazing work, it really is an inspiration.

I too have improved drastically in just the past few years or so. I started having the drawing teacher I have now and have improved tremendously.

I think I like this better than anything else in your gallery. It sort of makes artists who feel like "Ugh, I will never get better" realize that with the right attitude and energy put forth, you can become great!!

This is a big insperation for me. I've been drawing anime style for about 7 years now. I've never beeen very good but i look back now and I'm a hell of alot better than i use to be. I also want to start drawing realistic pictures/portaits becuase i know of so many, and they're so beautiful, especially yours. I'm a big fan and i could just dream to be as good as you are some da, but I can still try! =3
