I was looking through my scraps and saw this very old portrait I did back in 2002. It made me smile, and laugh, because A) it's funny to see how I started and B) it looks so terribly bad. I remember, when I finished my first portrait, I was so proud of myself!I had this crazy idea of getting all my best portraits of each year and put them next to each other.
Hmm, I think I improved my skills just a little, don't you think?...
I had several periods
2002 - the 'I like to draw stuff from magazines' period
2003 - the 'Lord of the Rings rox my sox' period
2004 - the 'Johnny Depp is so cool' period
2005 - the 'random actors and actresses' period
2006 - the 'I think I really do like Final Fantasy' period
2007 - the 'and House kicks ass as well' period
So people, stop saying you won't become as good as I am these days. When I started, my stuff looked really bad, too!

i was giving up on this style cuz it was too hard but now i think i'll keep going. you inspired me. but how did u do the shading for the hair, and skin its so hard and frustrating.

hey just a question. how big are the papers you work on? i mean, every drawing you do is so detailed so i don't think you manage to do that on a small piece of paper, it looks like it's huge xD (but you're extremely talented so i wouldn't be surprised) i'm also asking because my scanner can't scan anything bigger than A4, so... i was just wondering

The size of the paper I usually work on is A4, since -like you said- my scanner can't scan anything bigger than A4.

Your gallery is really awesome and you keep inspiring me to keep on drawing portraits. Everytime I have the "oh no my art sux"-periode I just have to look at this picture to be reminded that everybody can become what they want or be as good as they want.
For that I am grateful.

Wow, I wish I could make my shading as smooth as yours looks!
Right now I'm 15 and I'm somewhere between 2004 and 2005.
I just hope that in two or three years my drawings can look as great as your last one does! Sometimes I look at my old drawings and I literally drew the hair in strand by strand, which I guess can look good, but it just looked all stringy for me.

That is really amazing progress. I started drawing in 2003 and it's funny how each time you draw something it comes out better than the last. I look at things I drew back in August and already I've realised they're not very good because I've worked out how to improve them, but that always means you're growing. But wow, your House drawing. WOWW.

I wish I could draw like you've drawn when you were 17. I started drawing this and that in 2002 too, but... I suppose I'm not as talented as you.

I always like to start at the end of an artists gallery, once I have been sucked in by an amazing piece of art. By starting at the end and working forward, you get to follow along the artist's journey, in part at least.
By the time you were 17, you were already a world-class master-artist if portraits in pencil. You have an amazing and wonderful talent, and the sky is the limit.
I hope you feel great pride in yourself, as I image your family and friends do. You are obviously much admired and respected here.

You have no idea how much hope you just gave me.
When I was in elementary school I was always seen as 'that girl who can draw', but after a few years my ability kinda stagnated and I stopped practicing. I'm 18 now, and very recently bagan drawing again. I'm at about your 2003 level, maybe a little behind. I don't think I'll ever be as talented as you, but you've given a perfect example of how it is possible to improve.

Your improvement is fantastic. I think this is a great way of showing to anyone that with time and effort, anything is possible in terms of improving art skills. It's certainly inspiration to me. I would put myself at around your 2004 image in terms of my own capabilities and I'm improving slowly.
