Description I was looking through my scraps and saw this very old portrait I did back in 2002. It made me smile, and laugh, because A) it's funny to see how I started and B) it looks so terribly bad. I remember, when I finished my first portrait, I was so proud of myself!

I had this crazy idea of getting all my best portraits of each year and put them next to each other.

Hmm, I think I improved my skills just a little, don't you think?...

I had several periods
2002 - the 'I like to draw stuff from magazines' period
2003 - the 'Lord of the Rings rox my sox' period
2004 - the 'Johnny Depp is so cool' period
2005 - the 'random actors and actresses' period
2006 - the 'I think I really do like Final Fantasy' period
2007 - the 'and House kicks ass as well' period

So people, stop saying you won't become as good as I am these days. When I started, my stuff looked really bad, too!

Have fun watching and... keep up the good work!

Haha this made me lol
I remember the days when I was 12-13.. The days where you only used one pencil to draw a portrait
Lol xD
It's quite amazing how much you improved
Unfortunately I didn't get too much better lol
I kind of thought that maybe that's just as good as I'm going to get
But this makes me hopeful that I still could improve

Wow, you've improved lots! ^^

Quick question(s?) : ok, before i start, i am sorry i feel like i'm bothering you with these....
What kinda of paper do you use? Are there any brands of supplies you recomend for doing these types of shading pics? And how long does it take for you to make your pics, roughly?

LOL, i think I'm in between your 16 and 18 year old spots right now ^^ somewhere around there XD

Thanks again, and great job! (i thinks i shall have to watch you now =3 )

Hmmm... I'd say I'm in the 16-17 range on your "scale" at the moment. Since I'm currently 18, I'm only a little behind where I would have been if I had taken this up earlier--that's good news for me. I've keep wondering if it's actually possible to do this stuff, and I could still (theoretically) do well.

Also, I love these year comparisons. Aside from seeing how the artist has personally grown (your art is very good, by the way), it gives me hope that I could eventually do the same. ...an hour a day, though? When I have an hour, I'm usually on Photoshop... *sigh* Why does talent have to be so much WORK?

wow that's so cool. that really inspires me and i'm 15. this makes me think that i just might have a chance in being able to draw like that. did you ever take any art classes or anything to get better, or did you just practice by yourself? i've never had any art classes and i've improved a lot this past year, but i really want to get better. what did you do? i'm curious.

I hope I improve like you! My portraits for 16 years old... at least, I don't think, looks as great as yours. Haha. I don't remember when I started drawing though... Maybe when I was 14, like you.

*sigh* Someday... House...

I have a question though. Why don't you use charcoal? Have you ever tried using it? I started using charcoal 3 portraits ago, and I think it's amazing.

Wow!! This is awesome! I guess I'm gonna dedicate some time to my drawings so I can make an improvement in five years. This is so inspiring! I'm gonna start drawing right now!

I started drawing a portrait of Angelina Jolie like 3 months ago but I didn't finish it because I thought that I could never make it as good as I wanted. But now that I saw this I'm gonna finish it and continue practicing until I do it right! Thanks!

Nice...
I'm stuck for several years in the "Lord of the Rings rocks" period and the "Johnny Depp is so dreamy" period...
I've wondered so many times, what would happen if Johnny played in LotR...
Anyway, great improvement. House looks very realistic...

and which role should he get then? NazgΓ»l or Eomer, lol

Thanks!

I applaud you for putting this together. I think it's really inspiring for ambitious artists that want to become as good as you are. People forget that ALL of their favorite artists had to start somewhere. It's also a good reminder for artists who are already really good. When they're looking at somebody's work who isn't as advanced as theirs, hopefully they realize they too were once at that point.
